Refreshing an '83 300D engine w/ auto trans

I am getting an engine and transmission prepped up to be placed into another car. It came out of an '83 300D w/ the trans stamped 33.4920.00, MB p/n 126 271 1501.

What would you do (besides a good cleaning) to an engine/trans while it is out, when you have no real idea of its condition?
