Starter won't come out
 

I'm trying to replace the starter on my 240. I removed to two 10mm bolts on the front and the two big Allen key bolts on the back. It still feels like something is holding it pretty solid. Is there anything I'm missing.

There's a bracket under the starter that must be removed.

Under the starter? The only bracket i see. Is the one at the front with two 10mm bolts

It is at opposite flywheel end of starter.

Get a mirror and look under the starter, it should be there unless some knuckle head left it out.

If like my 300D's, the bracket is on the fwd end (relative to car) of the starter, or what you might call "rear of starter". There are two 10 mm bolts that attach bracket to starter. Since the starter must move fwd to remove, I think you must remove the bracket from the engine block (more 10 mm bolts), in which case you can leave it bolted to the starter. That bracket is semi-optional, since one of my cars didn't have it and I had to get one at the junkyard. Kudos for getting the 2 big allen bolts out. Did you use a special bent allen wrench to work from the engine bay or did you use 2.5 ft of 1/2" socket extender to work at them from the rear of the tranny (like I have), with your hands up in the grub zone? That would be a horrid job in a roadside repair.

Of course disconnect the BATT- cable before you start swinging wrenches anywhere near the starter.

This thread caused me to look at a 617 I have hanging in the shop. The trans is off & all the bolts, brakets, cables, etc are off but that bxxxtxxd starter wouldn't come off. It would let me wiggle it but felt like it was hung up. I gave the nose a tap (I had the luxury of the engine out of the car) and it finally came loose. I think that these starters can last long enough to wear a slight ridge in the nose housing that hangs up. Mine had lots of grit & carbon jammed in the opening, also. If you haven't got it out yet, screw the two socket head bolts back into the starter (a few turns should do) and tap on their heads to try and loosen the starter housing from the plate it is mounted to.
