Looking for a 300sd For sale

Hey guys Im new to this forum and am doing a nationwide search for a 300d or a 300sd. Im looking to buy a car that is in near perfect condition with everything working. I'm a mechanic so I don't mind doing maintenance but I want a well preserved example of one of these cars that doesn't need anything fixed at the time of sale. I found this car on ebay and it is once of the better looking cars I have come across in my search but the price is very high. Do you think this is a fair price for a car in this condition? Im planning on going to see the car tomorrow. I appreciate your opinions.

Welcome to our forum, what has you looking for an SD?

Ask all the questions you like on here, the massive talent gathered here can get practically any info you could need.

Our for sale section is much better at finding well cared for vehicles at reasonable prices...

15k is kinda hard to swallow when so many decent examples can be found for under 3K...

Thanks, Ive always loved the 300d and the sd. I like diesels, and love the style and build quality of these cars for their age. I know 15k seems pretty high, but the seller is negotiable. Really 3k? I haven't seen anything around that price range meeting my requirements. I basically want one that feels pretty close to a new car with everything working as it should.

Be careful with this guy. He just buys cars then shines them up.

No way that car is worth 14 grand.

Are you looking for a W116 or W126?

For 15k I would want really low miles, immaculate condition inside and out, records, nothing at all needed. Essentially a show car for that price.

Thanks for the advice, looking for a 116, 126, or a 123. But i want one that is mint, or at least very close to it. I will buy either chassis style, just depends which one pops up first. Also looking into an 84 300d in AZ, still getting more info from the seller but the car looks very good so far, they are asking $7500.

It s up to you of course. That car you are looking at may or may not be a car worth purchasing for much of a premium. If you must go look. Make sure the stamped oil change book is present in the dash or walk. In fact you may save yourself a trip just by phoning.

There is no reasonable excuse for it not to be present in any of these so called original low milage cars. Now if for any reason the car does totally check out. Fifteen thousand is for a guy that has endless money.

What you want is out there at much fairer prices but you have to hunt it down. Reselling the Mercedes star used and overpriced had been a long running issue.

Personally I'd go for a W116 if you want something that is going to retain its value better. They are already heading up in price and are fairly rare vs the W126. A 1980 would be nice. Now I know the W126 is a slightly better car, just the W116 looks cooler IMO.

Also this car doesn't look like a good deal. First, I would not advocate paying $15k for one of these with MB Tex. I sorta feel like the S-class should have leather. Next, I noticed the antenna on the car is broken, it is stuck partially up. The engine bay has lots of aluminium corrosion and maybe a leak on the oil cap. The lug bolts are also corroded. The tires look to be very old. I think the Firestone Affinity LH30s are still made (or were up to recently) but these look almost like a tire from the 80s looking at the type font and tread style. They do look a bit dry rotted on the treads. The car probably hasn't logged many miles recently (it does only have 68K miles though) but I would want to make sure it has actually been maintained with at least an oil change a year plus the correct year intervals for other fluid changes. No documentation of that, run away. Final thing would be the seller says it is a California car but the Carfax says Pennsylvania.

Wouldn't an original Cali car have the air filter right behind right headlight. That looks like a federal style (non Cali). Also if it not right around the corner from you, request some under belly photographs for leaks. 15K is very steep if any of the sellers claims are inaccurate.

That is an odd color, never seen it before.
I noticed the antenna first thing also, for $15K every thing should be working, and nothing needed
to be replaced.

The picture from the drivers side shows one pleat on the pass side as being flattened out.
But a picture from the pass side does not show it.

Being a dealer, the price will be jacked way up.

Yeah, that isn't a Cali car.

Nice example, but note the pitting, oxidation on the under hood components.

My antenna is the same way, doesn't go all the way down, but came up, when there was a radio.

Looks like it had paint work on the passenger front door. May just be the light but I doubt it.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I noticed the corrosion too, doesn't seem worth that price, but I was going to go see if he would take any reasonable offers if the car checked out. I also didn't know that if the antenna was partially out that meant it was broken. Unfortunately the sale of my current vehicle fell through... so I have to postpone my search for the merc until I sell my current vehicle. Rollguy, although I'm really looking for a 617 powered car I would be interested to hear more about yours.
