Harrison R4 compressor at exhorbitant price!
Ran across this ad while searching for R4 info:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321504181795item=321504181795&vectorid=229466&rmvSB=true Only $1111.00 w/ free shipping and fits many 70-80's M-B diesels. Better jump since only 2 left and they claim to have sold 42. Or you could buy one for $307 here (P-P). I recall paying $50 incl shipping last time I bought an R4 (new I recall). I am guessing the "1111." price could be some trick since I got there from a click-thru on another site where I recall a $111.10 price. But could just be a typo since other items on the seller's site look reasonably priced.

The outfit that bought the Harrison OE tooling also owns the labels Everco, Four Seasons, Murrays and most of the other old line cooling system replacement parts labels. They make new R4s as well as remans (ditto w/other GM type compressors). You can get new comps that are set up for R134A pressures & oils. The last few I have purchased were $169 (new/2014) to $199 (new/2015). My supplier has the remans at $99-$109. I have had pretty good luck, but the fundemental design has known flaws. The trade mags are starting to have ads from a Chinese supplier that has cheap clones of most AC compressors available in the states (less than 24hr delivery times). It would not suprise me to see these online for under $100. My guess is that they are trying to buy into the market place. Also there is an Italian parts supplier bombarding the trade mags w/ads for replacement parts (brakes, electrical, pumps). Both of these newcomers have been advertising for distributors between the coasts. I have no 'hands on' experience with either company. My local parts houses are too far off the beaten path. Benz AC systems & compressors are such a PITA to swap out I won't use questionable AC parts on customers cars (nor my own). If it was a beater 79 Caprice w/the compressor on top, I'd try a cheap R4, otherwise I prefer a known supplier (even for the extra C note). I hate re-doing a job!

Crazy high prices are usually because eBay doesn't have a function to just pause a listing, and eBay charges you to list, so if they run out of stock or are away most people just do that so nobody will buy it in the meantime, rather than end the listing and relist and get charged again for it.
Looks like they have a couple pages of listings that are all $1111, I would bet money they're all out of stock. Why not just ask them? -Rog |

If I was faced with an R4 I'd just do a Sanden conversion. It makes no sense trying to replace a severely obsolete compressor.

Nah, the link just isn't the correct format. Here it is:
AC Compressor w Clutch Buick Chevrolet GMC Mercedes Benz Oldsmobile 58228 | eBay Or copy and paste the item number into eBay's search box. I'm telling you though, in a few days or a week the price will be normal again. I guarantee there's no grand conspiracy to prey on stupid people with deep pockets. -Rog |

I speculated that if a con, they were trying to sucker foreigners who don't check exchange rates. But, the post #3 idea "list high when out of stock" makes sense. Wonder what happens if someone bites. Bet they would try real hard to deliver.
