Will ML270CDI 6 Speed trans Bolt to OM602 Turbo?

I am researching the possibility of bolting the 6 Speed Manual Trans from a ML270CDI to a OM602 Turbo motor. Does anyone know if the OM612 and OM602 blocks have the same transmission bolt pattern??

Not your exact use, but I am aware of a 5 Speed from a 211 3.2 CDI being bolted to a 87 300D with a 603. He somehow adapted the controller.
so evidently, such things can be done.

I'm located in the western Mojave Desert in LA County. However, the ML270CDI was never brought to the US by the MBZ which is a huge shame. Can you shed any light on my question on whether the OM602 and OM612 blocks have the same bolt pattern for transmissions??

I'm about 97% sure that it is not the same.

The OM612 is used in Sprinter vans so there should be bell housing flanges in the US available for comparison.

@ vstech, thanks for the link to the great work done by gryling608. This is encouraging, but can anyone confirm 100% that the M111 and OM61X blocks have the same transmission bolt pattern??

Also, not sure if anyone is interested, but there were two different sets of ratios for the NSG370 Six Speed Manuals back in the 99 - 04 time frame. The diesels had a wider spread than the gas version which gryling608 took from an M111 powered C230K.

I think gryling608 answered that question for you. I know all the OM60X blocks have the same pattern, but the OM61X blocks (in your question above) are different from OM60X in that the starter is on the opposite side. I assume that your question should have been: "can anyone confirm 100% that the M111 and OM60X blocks have the same transmission bolt pattern??" because you have an OM60X (602 or 606) in your car and want to bolt up a six speed from a car that had an M111.

EDIT: I can't imagine that MB designers would change a bell bolt pattern for a specific engine (OM612), when a model used Diesel and gas engines, manual and automatic transmissions in the same chassis. I believe that all engine/trans bolt patterns from OM60X engines and newer, have the same pattern. I may be wrong, but it does not make sense that MB would "reinvent the wheel".

When I was looking for a bellhousing for my 722.6 swap I had looked at a sprinter and thought that the starter is in the wrong spot so I didn't study it any further but I'm pretty sure 61X and 60X don't interchange.

As far as M111 and 60X they are the same.

Soooo... Are you saying it may work on a 617?

From the research I've conducted on the OM60X, 61X and 64X Engines, the starter motor is located on the Left Side (Drivers side in US/Europe) of the Engine. However, it looks like I will have to go to a MBZ wrecking yard and take measurements off OM602, OM603, OM612 and M111 blocks to get my answer.

The starter on the 61x is on the right side of the vehicle. That is the passenger side in the US.

The starter on the 60x is on the left side of the vehicle. That is the driver side in the US.

Transmissions that were used on those two engines will not interchange because the starters are on opposite side and the transmission will not bolt up.

At least one individual has taken a 5 speed manual trans from a 190E (which is a starter on the left side) and cut the bell housing so that he could use it on a 61x engine. The work is not easy.

I've attached a link to a sale taking place on ebay right now, where there is a 5 Speed Auto in a 2004 Sprinter shown. In the center picture of the 3 posted, one can clearly see that a space has been cast into the left (driver) side of transmission bell housing for the Starter Motor. The 2004 US Sprinters came with a OM647 which is an updated version of the OM612.

Also, please supply a picture of the OM61X Engine with the starter on the right (passenger) side, as I am always happy to be educated further on what is fact versus fiction.
