800 mile roundtrip

Just took an overnight trip to SoCal.

total 800 miles without a hiccup.

just wanted to say thanks to everyone's contributions, answering questions, adding comments, and all the great DIY writeups

and a special thanks to Dan for donating a vacuum pump! (I did finally find the NLA reuild kit.)

the last time my benz drove that distance was 2004. when I moved up to SF.

after doing a bunch of maintenance, fluid changes, parts changes, rebuilds, etc. I am confident that greater distances can be covered without breaking a sweat.

keep up the good work gents!

Glad to hear you had a safe trip.
As long as these old cars are maintained, there is no reason that they are not a reliable daily driver.

The masses drive the average econo box, and one looks just like to next one.

These old W123 are a special breed, and the people that own love and maintain them are also a special breed.

Check the visability a 123 has compared to the blind spots the average
econo box has.

Good to hear you are keeping her on the road.

How was your Oil consumption? I as because a lot of members have been suprised at their Oil Consumption on long Freeway Trips.

I went on a 200 Mile trip and consumed or leaked 1/2 + quart of Oil.

I also had a friend ask me about Oil consumption recently as her Father owned an Old Mercedes Diesel which apparently used More Oil then was expected. Unfotunately She does not know what Engine or Chassis the Car was.

I just took my grey 82 on a 3000 mile trip. oil consumption was about a quart on the first 1000 or so miles.

went through about a gallon on the second 1000 miles, and then the last 1000 miles I went through about 8 gallons...

I had to stop every 100 miles and dump another gallon in.
Turbo drain seals or crankcase separator. got home and fixed it up, no more leak now.

Its actually pretty cool, there's no oil spots under that car now.

What's the best way to calculate oil consumption?
Dipstick? What is the correlation between volume and the marks on the dipstick?
Thanks
