2005 E320 CDI oil burner
I am burning a quart of oil every 500 miles and I have good blow by (dah) it seems to be stuck rings. It sounds like it needs a quart of oil at idle. Even when full.
My question is how long do you thing I can drive it for before it blows up and stops running? It has been going like this for 20k miles. I have been averaging 120 miles a day since September. Robert |

Have you tried any additives?

As another poster mentioned, there are a number of additives that may or may not work, but it is worth a shot. Good luck

Dura Lube worked the best it went from a quart every 200 miles to every 500 miles. I am on my second batch. I tried every other one I can find for sale locally also.
I added a small bottle of oil detergent it did not help either. I also added a water injection system. Did not do anything either. |

Does it smoke at all? Have you checked its not a leak from something like the turbo lines?

It leaks a little oil from the drivers side somewhere It has 247k miles. It does not smoke at idle but give a bit at full throttle. I think the water injection keeps it from looking bad. But it still has blow by and still sounds like an 80's diesel

It'll probably keep chugging along as long as it does not run out of oil so keep it at proper levels. Did it consume oil before it started a diet of VO? If not, how many miles on VO did it take?
I don't think it is possible to free stuck rings w/o piston removal. Maybe someday we will see nanorobot technology that will remove the carbon that is sticking the rings.

It is not that simple but about 80k miles. I pulled the grease system out 10k miles ago because something was wrong with it and now I am spending $500 a month extra on fuel. I need to get that system working again but I have been busy

Sounds to me like you are jumping to an awfully large conclusion assuming it's rings that are causing the oil consumption. What other data do you have that points to stuck rings? Unless by "good blowby" you mean there is a lot of blowby, which is bad, not good? Have you done a compression test? Or any other diagnostics?

I remember from another thread that you idle, and run this vehicle in city driving quite a few hours per day and is there any piston slapping sound. Have you given it a long hard run since the H20 injection system install? Also what GPH nozzle are you using? Just my thinking that steam and dwell from a good long run could possibly help "Italian tuneup" so to speak. But I wouldn't expect miracles maybe one cylinder starts improving than the next over time etc. etc.

It is a lot of blow by and it was burning 1 quart every 3 k miles then one oil change I drained and filled and it was burning every 200 miles. Yes I got it up to 120 mph a few times on trips across the state. Maybe it is cleaning slowly. It was using more of the water mixture in the beginning then now.

Your water injection system is set up as a performance system. It only comes on at full throttle/high boost to cool the combustion chamber and lower EGT.
See if you can get it set up so you can turn it on when cruising on the freeway. Maybe a push button or momentary switch. I would try using it at legal freeway speeds. Down shift so the rpms are between 2500 and 3000. Turn on the system. If the engine falters after a while, then it is injecting too much volume for continuous use. In that case you will have to control the volume by turning it on and off. This water therapy will help clean the cylinders and may help loosen stuck rings. It will not help if the problem is warn off metal. Do this at your own risk. YMMV

Get a W210, or older, car and convert it to run on VO. At $500/month in fuel costs, the payback should be relatively quick.
If you get a car running on VO again, do not idle for long periods of time on VO. Either shut it down or switch to diesel when idling for long periods of time.
