717.400-.420 getrag GL275 repair manual free

I have the shop manual on cd for anyone who needs it. It is for the gwagon version 717.420. the only difference is the 717.400 has the tail flange for a flex disc. So the tail flange is different. It will cover 717.400 .401 .402 .403 and.717.420-422 G-wagon Some photos are grainy but it is the best manual I have found for the gl275. Pm me and I will send a big file to your email. Just give me your email address and it is yours. Please only request if you really need it. Thanks

Some questions from people who have the 717.400. and other gl275 series gearboxes

The manual is for the 717.420 which is the same as the .400 with exception to the tail shaft flange. My transmission guy modified his tool for removal of the input shaft bearing. When it was done though it did not solve the notorious wiggle that the input shaft has. I don't think it is an issue really. If you are trying for the noise while it is in neutral clutch out, you will be forewarned, as that issue was not solved either. Look up "reverse idler Getrag 5 speed". I now just run it and am not worried about the noises much. I have read much about people going through all sorts of lengths to quiet these boxes down and all seem to come up short. They all still seem to have the rattle after extensive work. One thing that comes to mind though is to check your shims while in there. Be sure the clearances are in order. you can get new ones from MB. Transmission Shops can find info for the .400 through their web shop info program for the 190e cosworth dogleg. 717.404 all of these are the GL275.
"Many thanks for the manual and the information. I'm trying to fix the very noise you describe. The transmission shifts well and doesn't leak. The noise only occurs after a cold start and only occasionally. I've read that a bad input shaft bearing on this model will ruin the needle bearing on the back of the input shaft. The bearing surface of the shaft is ultimately destroyed. If I have it out this winter I'll have a look. If all is well I'll live with it."

"Excellent, I just received it. My car has the infamous input shaft bearing rattle. So at minimum I'll be replacing that and now I seem to also get some slight bearing whine in 5th gear. I'd love to just rebuild the whole thing with all new bearings and synchros. Have you had any luck at repairing one of these? Do you know of any sources for a rebuild kit or any parts/part numbers if they're even still available? "
As far as I am concerned the input shaft bearing does not have anything to do with the play side to side or the noise related to neutral with clutch out.
I have my old input shaft bearing and it looks new. There is not a sign of wear. These gearboxes are strong and built like truck gearboxes. that is why they are noisy. Even the guy who put the spit bearing in for rigidity admitted that he was going into it again to chase the infamous neutral noise. He never posted a success story afterwards.
Another account from a South Africa Gwagon site, people threw money endlessly to fix the notorious rattle never being able to figure it out.
I dont think it is an issue. These boxes should be able to go for practically ever. With a motor with only as much torque as a 300d it would be especially long before needing rebuilding.

Hello Mr. Doner

I'm approaching install of 717.400 into a nice 84 300TD.

This web site:
https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine/locate?c=Mercedes-Benz

has until recently still had the Mercedes fische for the part numbers for that transmission. Sadly recently the 717.400 exploded diagrams have vanished from that site. It was great, simply enter the VIN for a 300D euro with the 5 speed Euro donor car and it showed the fische and many of the parts for that trans were still available.

That site no longer shows that tranny.

Can anyone direct me to a site or any source of part numbers for the 717.400.

Thanks in advance.

It's been a while. The key words when at the dealer are"i need a part for my gearbox. It is not the original so can I give you the transmission number for a parts diagram so we can determine which parts to order. " That usually does the trick.

I am not good much anymore for this sharing of the manual unless people dont mind waiting for a while. I have no home internet and have become extremely busy with living. Does anyone wish to take over the service? If you have the resources at hand, it's easy. I'm not much help at this point. I can in the future possibly.

I just tried to PM you my email address for the manual but it said your PM inbox is full and cannot accept any new messages. I know you said it would be a while until you can send the manual but when ever you have a chance could you email it to me?

So I am available again if anyone needs this. I may lag a little, depending on urgency and time. Also I would like to add that a separate manual is available for the 717.41/43 series from the w201 w124 w461 and others. Pretty much anyone rebuilding an aluminum case one piece MB gearbox could benefit from the information in these manuals. The four speed 716.21 included, due to its similarity to the 717.41 gl76/18 .

I will take it. I recently installed a 717.400 in my 83 300d. No rush at all, hope it lasts me a long time.

Helo C.Doner,

Any chance you can send it to me as well, I just missed the previous dispatch.
I am rebuilding a 717420 and will definitely need this manual in future.

TIA
