Diesel Porn

I mentioned in my build thread that I had ordered a performance fuel injection pump for the Mercedes OM617 engine in Mutt the Race Truck. I went with Dieselmeken based on the recommendation of Jetmugg who runs a VW Diesel w/Dieselmeken pump and I know he can spank me badly! Anyhow, Goran turns out to be a great guy and a HUGE help and as we are both LSR racers, Goran has experience with what we need.

Anyhow, the pump showed up today! So my tail is wagging.

Pics:

First of all, this is actually a totally different pump from what was on the engine though they may share some castings. The ALDA (provides enrichment under boost) and other aspects bear no resemblance to the factory US Bosch pump. The engine came with an "MW" pump and this is an "M".

Here you can see the "elements" - sort of the equivalent of plug terminals on a distributor. The stock ones seem to be 5.5mm if the Internet sources are correct. These are 8mm - HUGE by comparison! Almost 1.5 times bigger, like going from a 650 CFM carb to a 925CFM. Diesels essentially make more power as you throw more fuel at them (within limits) so this kind of difference = LOTS more power. At least I hope it does!

I copied and pasted this from BangShift so some of it a bit basic for you guys but still good info. BTW - are the elements "mm" or mil"?

Thought y'all might like to drool a bit!

Dan

Elements are mm.

Super excited to see this going into Mutt! I've been wondering if you were going to do something like this eventually.

It'll be a month or more before I get into the installation. The Volvo is taking most of my time these days - along with the hoist stall where I do most of my REAL work. So stay tuned but don't expect much for a while.

Are you planning to add an engine oil cooler along with the big bump in power?

No plans for that. Given that the engine only runs for a few minutes at a time I've seen no signs of it getting too hot. In fact, I have the opposite problem - I have to run the engine in the staging lanes to get a reasonable amount of heat into it before the run. If overheating proves to be an issue I'll rethink that, of course.

Goran is your guy! This is not to speak badly of Maya - I just haven't had any dealings with them.

With no engine oil cooler, I think that would be a good idea so you have an idea of the piston temps. How about monitoring the oil temp as well?

Lets get the math right, so we can appreciate the engineering! An 8mm valve has a cross section that's more than double a 5.5mm valve. Its more like going from 650cfm to 1300!!! You will need more boost. (And think about that radiator)

That welderup show running currently. The one that puts diesels into older vehicles and over fuels them seems to be catching on more all the time.

I was sitting here thinking about the best place to put the six inch stack on a 39 Studebaker truck. It has to be high enough though to keep the rolling coal off that nice paint.

To compound things more. When that 39 Studebaker was started it was more convention to restore them in a nice fashion. Now it appears the rougher the better is more in vogue.

The expression you cannot win keeps floating through my mind. Now if Tom tells anyone it has a diesel engine. They will ask him where is the smoke stack and why is the rust also missing?

Also appears maybe I should have purchased that old Hudson pick up after all. Everything that concerned me would have been no issue at all anymore.

I have pictured the CE with a stainless stack running up the right rear of the cab many times....and three clearance lights on the roof front and rear... a mini Mack look.

I think I will keep the stock look (except for the ground clearance and wheels and tires) though since the body is such a classic.

The exhaust is currently coming out the right side just in front of the rear fender.

Well at least if the public gets too critical you can easily paint the rust on.

Really though I like your truck and if anyone asks if it is a diesel when they hear it running. You can just tell them it has bad rod bearings.

Much of my two recent posts on this thread are of course all in jest. Epa or department of transport type regulatory agencies in our area would be all over me. Especially if I had a smoke belching diesel conversion like some of the welderup shop are turning out.
