Automatic transmissions
Does anyone knows the difference between the automatic transmission in a 87 300D and the automatic transmission in a 92 300CE can I use the transmission from 92 in the 87?

The '87 300D should be either the 722.317 or the 722.357
The 92 300CE should be either the 722.359 or the 5 speed 722.501 The valve bodies will certainly be different - "diesels" have different shift points Around 1988 there was a big change in the transmissions and they started to add in more plastic parts

IIRC the '92 300CE has second gear start. I'll take the .317's shift points over second gear start any day... not to suggest that's the only difference. The torque converter is another possible point of difference.

From my limited knowledge of such things the '87 should run with the .359. I'd keep the '87 torque converter unless you know it to be bad. I'd also swap the valve body unless you suspect the .317 valve body to be bad but only after a test drive in the '87 reveals untoward behavior. I'd only swap the governor if you like to wind the 603 and after exhausting Bowden cable settings. Does the .359 have a vacuum device where the Bowden cable attaches? That might change things.
