Will A 722.317 W124 300D Transmission Fit A W126 350SDL With 722.361?

The transmission in my roommate's 1991 W126 350SDL has no reverse due to a bad reverse clutch pack. It's a 722.361 transmission.

I picked up a free transmission from dieseldiehard that was supposed to be from a W126 350SD. But now I am looking at the transmission and it has a 124 part number above the oil pan and at the rear of transmission by the yoke. It is also stamped 722.317 above the oil pan, so I would say it's actually a W124 transmission not a W126.

Is this going to bolt up fine, and is the gearing going to be the same? I wonder if I should just attempt to replace the reverse clutch pack on the original transmission.

Everything but the speedo drive should work, and a .317 governor would be calibrated to the higher redline of a 603.96 vs .970. .317 has a gear drive, 126s use an inductive drive. The governor won't be an issue if you don't rev beyond 4500 and the only consequence might be it doesn't shift at redline unless you lift off the pedal. That .317 might have been rebuilt to .361 specs. Can you put your finger through the speedo cable attachment hole and feel the inside of the transmission or is there a plastic up in the way? If you're adventurous enough to replace a reverse clutch pack, you should be able to swap and tail housing and speedo drive and even the governor to use the .317 without tearing it further apart.

The 350SDL currently has an OM603.96 (3.0) engine in it. The previous owner replaced the engine but left the transmission. I looked into the speedometer cable attachment hole of the spare .317 transmission, and there is a square hole where the cable would attach. Thanks for the information.

Yes, the cable has a square profile and it fits into a square hole inside the transmission.

I think I'm just going to rebuild the original transmission. There is a first time for everything.
