OM 603 960 PISTON RINGS

Hi to everibody
I am doing head gasket and re seal my engine and after looking my cylinders I am thinkîng to change piston rings.
I founded 3 kits of the same company for bore 87mm
My pistons are stamped ''x''
here codes
08-183300 00
08-183200 00
08-743607 00
all are composed by 3 rings with same dimension 2mm 2.5mm and 3 mm
Do you have any suggestions?
Any experience ?
I will do honing but i would like to install best rings to have good compression
Thanks a lot
Alberto

Can you see old honing marks in the piston bores?

A good indication generally if these old engines have not been rebuilt before. If you decide to ring it have the pistons checked for size. They apparently wear in these engines. If you were not burning oil and had good compression I might not do the rings.

Depending on your area and cost and availability. Picking up a complete used engine in good condition might be better overall if you are really going into the engine and seem to need rings.

The wear in the Piston ring grooves needs to be checked and the out of round of the Cylinders. There should be a spec in the Manual for how much out of round is acceptable.

The ~200K mile 603.960 block that went into my '93 SD had main and rod bearings that Plastigage'd within installation specs so I didn't replace them. I don't replace things that don't need replacing but I'm always waiting for a reason to revisit

Same with my engine at 249k, and with all crosshatching still in the bores and ring end gap good, the cylinders didn't get machining either. Love that Mobil 1!

Check out Deves rings if needed. . Deves.com. I used them in my rebuild back in '03. Pistons and cylinders were within limits so had cylinders professional honed and broke in on mineral oil for 5000 miles. Back to Mobil 1 turbo diesel oil with no issues (oil burn) for 13 years. Mileage is unknown since speedo has been changed a few times but it is my daily driver.
