Snatched Up A Pop Tester Used By the Pilgrims...

I believe this may have been used to test the diesel injectors on the Mayflower on its way to Plymouth Rock.

I managed to get this antique from my good friend and MB indy mechanic. He's 84 and plans to sell his shop and tools in the very near future. What I didn't learn from this forum I learned from him. This old pop tester had been sitting for years. It was actually stuck but I disassembled it, cleaned it, and it's working again. He bought it 30 years ago when he went into business. He said he just quit using it and started buying already rebuilt diesel injectors. It's a dinosaur but functional. I may install my glycerin gauge for fun.

nice find!

I was looking for an old "made in Germany" bosch tester, but all of them seemed to be missing parts and over-priced.

the new ones are all made in india.

I gave up the search, and outsourced my injector rebuild to greazzer.

Yes, I meant to compliment your tester for being one of the older german made examples.

I would bet that these older units are better quality.

I just wish I knew how to operate this tester.

Actually, that's a few years newer than the one the Pilgrims used. Remember, they had to run theirs on rendered deer fat (no oil wells yet) so it was a whole different thing.

As far as how to use it - I'd check online. We had a similar unit at EPA which I ran on rare occasion but I always had to get out the instructions.

If only...

It were that simple. I've been searching. I haven't found a manual yet. Ugh!

Well, everything isn't as great as it seems. Either I'm operating it incorrectly or it's leaking off pressure rapidly because I'm having to pump constantly to get it up to pop pressure and then it drops back to zero. I'm thinking something ain't right. The injectors that I've tested are popping at the 135 bar range but I'm working the lever constantly.

If I close off the gauge then I can feel the resistance on the lever increase. I'm wondering if there's a leak in the gauge.

If leaking thru the gage, you will eventually see the fluid, perhaps filling the interior of the gage. More likely, the internal check valve at the cylinder outlet is leaking, probably from debris. It needs check valves so that it sucks new fluid from the 1 atm supply reservoir as you return the handle, similar to how your heart works.

My google search yielded:

681 200 502, EFEP 60H - Diesel Injector Nozzle Pop Tester

Operating Instuctions Bosch Part Number 1 689 979 031

Try emailing the mfg direct from their contact tab on their website at Bosch worldwide with a request for a pdf of the missing manual.
