W126 and w123 wheels interchangeable. ..

Most anything else... no.

Some over 17" wheels will fit with a thin sidewall tire.

There are others, but you need an offset less than 30... 24 I think...

I haven't seen any aftermarket wheel that looks better on a W123 than the standard steel wheel with hubcap or the aluminum bundt style alloys.

Not saying there isn't a better looking wheel out there, I just haven't seen one.

One thing I'd love to see is a polished version of the light alloy wheels that look like steel wheels (123 400 13 02 or 123 400 15 02). That would be unique!

Doing a Google Image Search for "W123 wheels" turns up a decent amount of results for you to look through... see if you see something you like

Also, BenzWorld has a really nice thread going... 11 pages of W123 wheels. W123 Rims What works? - Mercedes-Benz Forum

These are my favorite aftermarket wheels. Centra made them, forget what they are specifically called:

I'm running 16x8 ET11 AMG light alloy wheels. They're known to most as "AMG Pentas". I run 225 50 R16 tires on all 4, as well as 20mm H&R spacers in the rear. My fenders are rolled, and I have H&R springs.

Prior I ran enkei 92 in 16x7 ET30.

Prior to that would be 17x8F 17x9R Privat Remembers.

16x7 ET37 forged CLK's

14x5.5 aluminum steelies.

Moral of the story is that there are plenty off options. Just watch out on the offset up front. You want to keep it between about ET 15-30mm. Anything 17 or bigger rides like trash in my opinion. I find 16 inch wheels to be the perfect median.

As I recall, the wheels with the hubcaps are aluminum as well.

You can run CLK wheels without spacers, but the front center caps won't fit over the wheel bearing dust caps. If running no spacers, you must use steel wheel lugs.

It depends on the wheel. Completely black hubcap-style wheels are steel, ones with dashed white lines are 5.5" aluminum wheels, and ones with solid white lines are 6" wide aluminum.

Most hubcap-equipped cars have steel wheels. The 5.5" aluminum wheels are uncommon and somewhat expensive ($400-$500 a set on eBay), and the 6" ones are kind of a holy grail.

Here is a picture of the 5.5" aluminum wheels:

Wow. Mike's car with the hubcaps and lowered ride height looks incredible. Well done.

Here are a couple of relevant FSM links with information about which wheels came with these cars from the factory.
