what is this bolt?

seems that it holds the timing pointer, but does it do anything else?

and is it possible to leak oil from here?

the pointer was cleaned when I did my front crank seal, now it appears that the pointer and bolt have oil residue...

no oil from above or below.

doesn't appear that the vc gasket is leaking. vacuum pump is clean. power steering pump isn't throwing fluid anymore.

thoughts?

Was the whole front of the engine cleaned and degreased until it was all bare metal and easy to see where the oil is coming from?

That's the weird thing

The whole front was cleaned and the only oil visible is that segment.

Thumbs up

I thought that covered a timing chain rail pin?

Ok.... I did not recognize it last night due to the angle in the FSM picture ..
it is a ' closing plug ' FSM page 05.8-340/3 f2
for the ' inner slide rail '....

Are you just looking at stopping that leak ?
or are you going to need to deal with that chain rail pin ?
if just the leak it looks like in the manual you can..

Although I guess that plug could leak the most likely leak is above on the valve cover gasket or the gasket for the vacuum pump.

Under the cover there's just a copper washer / ring.

thanks stretch.

the vacuum pump is leak free. just installed a rebuilt vacuum and new gasket.

I guess its possible to get a leak from the vc gasket, but I can't trace it all the way up.

will re-investigate.

Yes it can leak oil. The vac pump doesn't overlap it, and has a slight cut-out on the OD to clear it. I recall it has an aluminum washer seal. I would first try just tightening it slightly. If you unscrew, junk can fall into the gap so will need complete removal. Have a can of Permatex "gasket sealant" ready (auto parts). It is good for coating threads and stays pliable.

Was this bolt removed during the front crank seal R&R? In other words, is this something completely different or aside from the front crank seal R &R you just did? If so, could this just be a coincidental repair that needs to be done?

The socket size might be 24mm - but it has been so long since I was there...

...I'm afraid you're probably on your own for that one!

No, didn't touch it.

Cleaned the front of the engine and put everything back together.

Front crank is dry but noticed oil around this bolt.

Vacuum pump and gasket recently done.

And new vc gasket recently done.

I guess I will try tightening first.
