Turbo boost + performance 85 300 SD
Hello I finally got around to hooking up my boost gauge cause I really wanted to know how much boost my kkk turbo is putting out on this 617. I hooked it right at the screw on the back of the intake pretty simple. I took it for a ride and it did feel snappier then it was before by a little my reading was 10 psi. max. boost. I measured my 0-60 time it was about 18 seconds. The engine has about 250-300,000 on it. My question is should I let well enough alone with this boost reading or should I try to get more out of it as I have read that people like to see 12 psi. boost which would probabaly tell the alda to add more fuel. I was elated with the boost and 0-60 time as I thought last time I checked 0-60 it was more in the 45 second area. The only thing that might have improved it that I can think of when I hooked this up is maybe the stud in the manifold was a little loose and it was losing some boost there. Whats everyones thoughts on these numbers? I have been told that the 0-60 time is 18 sec. in the F.S.M. If I do'nt try to get more boost I will be moving on to the injectors next to improve performance. I did not see any black smoke or any smoke for that matter when I stomped on it so I am certainly not dumping too much fuel in at this point maybe it could use a little more? What are all you thoughts? I value the opinons of everyone on this forum. Don

10psi seems fine, you can always tweak the ALDA for more response off boost. Have you tweaked the ALDA at all? My car was a dog off boost until I tweaked mine. Currently it is maxed out. There is a very mild whisp of black smoke then is all cleared up as soon as the turbocharger lights.
Remember the turbocharger is very small and the vehicle is not intercooled...so more boost does not always equal more power. New injector nozzles will make the power much smoother, I did not see much if any performance gain when I did mine. That does not mean that will not happen for you. Are the valve clearances set properly? 18 seconds seems awfully slow, but the car only had about 125hp/175tq when NEW. So I am not sure what you are expecting from the vehicle. My SDL was super slow when purchased, the overboost switchover valve was plugged with soot. I bypassed that and the car drove totally different. It is quicker than the 300SEL to about 45mph, then the top end power of the 300SEL pulls away from it. Not big time mind you, but decently. 300SEL was spec'd 9.4 seconds 0-60mph from the factory brochure. So I would guess the SDL is 12-14 seconds maybe?
