climate "temp tube" replacement - somebody tell me this is a bad idea...

...or an ok one. i discovered taking glove box out that my little temp hose section (the foam 5 inch section behind center dash) had totally disintegrated.

I replaced it with a little length of pex, just married to the two hard rubber hoses it connects, using 3M foil tape.

Is this an ok solution?

note: this picture is upside down (sorry)

I think it's fine... it just needs to sample inside air to get a temperature reading. It wouldn't be my first choice but then I don't have any PEX laying around. If I recall correctly, I used a length of heater hose and it's worked out fine.

Weird. Looking on my phone, my first pic is correct, but on laptop it's upside down. Either way thanks! Not too concerned about how climate works (only heat works anyway) - just didn't want to create any kinds of hazard these materials back there in dash.

No problem.

I'm wondering if it should have some foam pipe insulation over it. Since the original is made of insulating foam, it may have some effect on the temp sensor.

It may, but then the original was also kind of a semi porous foam material - so seemed like a very odd choice since it connects two hard rubber pieces. Also, why would Mercedes use same foam material for evaporator drain hose into trans hump?

That will be just fine

Almost anything would work, but I would be worried about that alum tape lasting long. No idea why the factory used foam tube other than cheap and saves weight. I used heater hose just because I had it and was the right size (5/8" I recall).
