1979 240D Chasing symptoms...

Yesterday I got the driver's side lower ball joint replaced, that took 2 1/2 hours. That OTC 1849 popped the lower ball joint with speed and ease like the other side. Both ball joint on this car are mortar-and-pestle. The stud moves freely in all directions, they might even sway in a breeze. Moving the stud with my hand I am reminded of a mortar and pestle, and grinding walnut shell bits. I am sooooo glad these are now on the bench and off the car!
So I decide to take a little test drive. I figured after changing out the ball joints and new Bilstein shocks, it should drive different.
I would do this job again in a heartbeat for the difference!
Now I can focus on the strange noise from the rear of the car that only happens when I downshift into first gear (automatic)- there is some sort of clunk, and it is time to chase this down.
I know the rear shocks are next, all you have to do is put the car in reverse and it rises. A previous car did this, and the rear shocks that I removed from it must have been swapped in from a clown car because they made me laugh once they were out. The only purpose they served was for looks, they were entirely non-functional.
I am thinking that the noise I am getting from the rear may be related to another pair of "clown car shocks", perhaps one is broken. The noise ONLY occurs under the acceleration (if I may use that term in association with the 240D) of first gear, and then only once, right at the start.
This afternoon I will get the back end of the car up on jack stands and see what I can find. I took a look under there last week and found that both sway bar links are good; perhaps the bushings are shot on the torsion bar itself.
If anyone has an idea of what this noise would be coming from, I would sure like to hear about it!

Cheers,

snapped_bolt

Starting at the front, working towards the rear:
Slop in the trans
Loose/failed trans mount
Slop in the drive shaft assembly - U joint, splines, couplings (flex disc)
Failed/loose subframe to body mount/bushings/mounting bolts
Slop /failed lower control arm(s), bushing(s), bearing(s)
Slop in the pinion to ring gear (diff)
Slop in the diff mount
Slop/failing CV joint(s) in the rear axle half shafts
Loose caliper(s), pads
Loose/failed shock(s)/mount(s)
Loose/failed sway bar, mount(s), link(s)
& check the lug nuts!
Happy hunting!

Went under on Friday...

Not a lot of looseness visible. The trailing arm bushings will be replaced as I see a bit of rust.
The spring shim on the driver's side shows rust as well, indicating that something is moving that wasn't meant to move. I don't imagine the other side could be any better. I'll replace both while I am doing the control arm bushings.

It could be the car has "clown car" shocks in the rear. I hear a little bit of a clunk as I am driving around occasionally. The sway bar links are good and tight. It could be an old rock-hard sway bar-to-body bushing, we will see.

Something I mentioned about this car months back still bothers on occasion- it refuses to crank, but there isn't even a "click" at the solenoid. The solenoid is a recent replacement, but that is meaningless if the solenoid is defective.
Once the sun is up far enough I will try to get some pictures. I have never seen so many wires going to the starter/solenoid, I would really like to know what should/shouldn't be tied in there.

Back outside to do my "survey".

Later,

snapped_bolt
