1983 300TD to 1985 Compatibility?

Im looking at a 1985 300TD wagon like my own which is a 1985. Asking $850, but says it needs to be towed, away. I may be able to do that.

If the rust isnt too bad I would almost buy it solely to replace my rear hatch as its so rusted But of course all the other parts I need would quickly pay off... (Front grille & Lenses, rear lights assemblies etc...

Would the hatch be interchangeable? And what parts wouldnt be interchangable if any?

Thanks.

There is not much that is different...pretty sure not any body parts.

You are comparing an 83 123 Wagon to a 85 123 Wagon ?
I would think most of the body parts would interchange..

I think the differences came in 85 to the engine and transmission... Tom's answer surprises me and I may be wrong...

edit.. ok I misread Tom's post.... I agree that most everything should fit...

but I do think some emission stuff on some 85's is different...

For sure differential gear ratio is different and so is speedometer between the 83 and 85.

82 - 84 3:07

85 2:88

The Speedometer is geared to the Differential.

The 85 Kali Kar has the Trap Oxidizer, Starter has the Solenoid on the bottom.
Down Pipe is longer.
Turbo sits higher, has the Arv Valve as does the 84.
Intake and Exhaust Manifolds are different also.
Air Filter assembly sits behind the R/F headlight. That element cost about $50.
Hole in end of crank is 34mm instead of 35mm like all the other 617 and 616 engines.
Stall speed of the Torque Convertor is different as well as the Transmission.
There is no drain tube from the air filter to the Upper Pan. The fitting in the pan is not there.

85 Federal is the same as the 82 - 84 yr models as far as I know.

Everything else on the wagons should be the same.
MB Tex pattern may be different.

Has anyone seen trans gear ratios by number? I'd also like to know what trans was mated with what rear end ratios in what year.

My 84SD speedo reads low and it would be nice to correct it. I think that the 84 & 85 SDs have an electronic speedo but different trans ratios. I can find out the rear end ratios by rotating 1 wheel and counting drive shaft revolutions but don't know what was originally installed in the 98.

all turbodiesel 123's have the 3.07 ratio, except the 85 which got the 2.88

same years for the SD's but include the older 78-81 in the turbodiesel mix on SD's... 3.07

as for body panels... everything is the same on the wagons. glass too! interior parts change between years, so keep an eye on that. materials, headrest styles, etc...

All the w126`s, Gas Diesel have the electric spedo`s.

You can find the Differential ratio by climbing under the car and read it off
the left lower corner. It is stamped in the metal.

I stole this from Deliveryvalve. send all royalties to him.
