84SD AC repair for the long term

This particular SD approaching good shape. Brakes, suspension, lots of little things are all taken care of. The engine leaks & oil lines are done. Climate push button & vac leaks are fixed.

AC is next. I have no idea on condition other than the compressor has always been locked up and the belt either broke or was cut with a piece of the belt left stuck in the compressor pulley. The lines still have R12 fittings and there is a handwritten label where a shop or someone worked on it but the label isn't legible. I plan on keeping the car.

What would you do if the objective is to have a well working system needing minimal maintenance. I don't want to keep tinkering with it as one objective is to have all cars refurbished and only needing maintenance - basically mostly turn the key & drive. I'm approaching that on the truck.

What parts would you replace as a matter of course? What needs more diagnosis or info before a decision? What gas?
