1985 300TD 617 Vacuum pump rebuild kit?

Are there kits available to rebuild a later 617 vacuum pump? Almost everywhere Ive looked online its only the one check valve and the main gasket that seals against the engine that can be purchased. The ************** fella has a kit it seems but its out of stock.

Why is it not something more availalble do you think? Is it just unlikely the other components need replacing?

I have a friend with a 1983 300CD who rebuilt his vacuum pump (vacuum diaphram and new gasket and new check valve fitting). Unfortunately, 3 weeks later the vacuum pump disintegrated and literally destroyed the engine (broken camshaft, camshaft towers, timing chain, etc.). I would highly recommend a new pump. I realize they are pricey ($350), but it is worth it. Just ask my friend.

You can catch new ones "on sale" now and then. I bought my new about 15 mos ago for $280.00.

There was 2 kits. The one for the Piston
0005891723 Piston Vacuum Pump Kit Piston end.

And there was another for the inside parts that included the Arm and Bearing.

When the kits were available both of them cost more then a New Vacuum Pump and if you rebuild the Pump yourself there is no warranty.
My question What in particular causes vacuum pump failure?

Maybe this is unrelated to the question asked here.
Reading this thread got me to thinking about this thread.

The pump on my 240D went out about a year ago. I purchased a kit from where you mentioned did the rebuild and it has been good ever since. (Roughly 5k miles or so)

I rebuilt the vac pump in my 1984 300D. Kit was ~$105, consisting of piston seal (teflon?), 2 inner check valves, and rubber gasket. Does not contain the outer check valve which is integral w/ the fitting. Great vacuum for ~3 years since.

To be safest, replace the 2 bearings in the roller. You can find posts w/ PN's. My 1985 300D came close to shedding parts into the timing belt. My son said it was making a noise. By the time it got home, the bearings had lost all the balls and the arm was cut half thru from dragging on the "roller ramp" for ~120 miles.

I swapped on a replacement vac pump, but didn't receive new bearings ordered from ebay in time. You can get metal-shielded bearings that should contain the balls, but I don't know that the balls are the main threat. In my case, no damage so I expect the balls just rolled past the timing chain. I didn't find any balls on the last oil drain, but hope to next time I pull off the pan. As my case shows, after the bearings go, the arm will eventually cut thru and those steel parts could definitely destroy the timing chain and sprockets. But, without bearings you will hear noises.

BTW, several have tried an electric vacuum pump (VW, Audi, ...). Some say it worked fine, others not. It will run at a higher duty cycle than for its normal brake booster intent, so probably less life than normal.

Thanks Bill, that sounds like exactly the same kit Im looking for but am having a hard time finding.

The one place I know of that sells the kit, is out of stock for an indefinite amount of time.

Ive been back and forth with the local MB dealership parts and the have more or less given up trying to find the part for me. Seems to be out of their date range, or just dont want to bother digging as much. the found a few diagrams for me but none showing the internal parts for the pump.

Ive been searching the forums for P/N but to no avail. Do you still have a record of where you got yours, or any info about a number?

I went through this ordeal a few months ago.

The piston kit is available but expensive.

The kit with the valves and rubber bits is NLA.

Your best bet is to find a shop that has NOS, or ebay.

I even checked with the MB classic center and they couldn't get that kit.

keep looking, or like mentioned before, buy a rebuilt/new pump for a little more.

if you do find the kits, the rebuild is easy.

eBay or ebay UK may have the Piston kit.

Looks like they were sold on Amazon for $165.

New-part.com may have them. product/mercedes-w123-w126-repair-kit-vacuum-pump-piston-type-genuine-0005861723-0

In post #13 Meistersatz also had a Kit for the Piston end; see the thumbnail pic.

That's why I bought and installed a new one. The risk wasn't worth the reward to me.

I was looking at this site. Scroll down to vacuum pump. I have never bought from them and have no affiliation.

It looks like the Check Valve that screws into the Vacuum Pump has jumped up in price.
