Easy 617 Turbo drain tube removal

There have been many times where the lower pan was removed to force the tube upward from below for removal, but I found this way to be easy without removing the pan. After the upper tube is removed from the turbo (cutting out most of the grommet helps the lower tube to move sideways, allowing for easy removal of the upper tube), affix a motorcycle tie-down strap with the end loop around the drain tube. Get your 3 foot crow bar, or any piece of pipe and loop the strap around it tight with one end resting on a rag on the valve cover. Lifting up on the end pulls the drain tube right out. You may need to adjust the strap tighter and get a better bite, but the tube should come out with only one or two pulls. The photos explain it better than I can.....Rich

That is beautiful. I love it. Thank you.

I am still surprised when I hear about the complications people have when removing the upper tube. I am always to remove it with the turbo in place and employing some thoughtful geometric wizardry to weave it out.

No shoving, banging or excessive bolt removal needed.

I once attached a nylon strap to the drain tube with hose clamps and the other end to a brake drum which I used like a slide hammer to pop it out...of course this was with the engine out of the car.

I like your solution better.

I'll shortly have the "ultimate solution" for the drain tube problem.

To affix rope to the tube, section of hose and a hose clamp on the tube to get a good bite.
