LOW MPG

I have a 2004, E320 CDI. Lately the mpg has dropped a lot and the car sounds more 'tapity' if there's such a word. I spoke to a garage today for some advice and was told that it could be the exhaust pressure sensor or lambda sensor. I've never heard of these and I'm not sure if it's a job I can do or if it has to go to a garage. The garage said that the would put it on the machine to diagnose, which would cost £60, then it could be anything up to £400. The car seems to be running as normal and there's no warnings or malfunctions showing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When my thermostat stuck open, my mpg went to crap. Check your temp gauge to make sure it's coming up to temp.

Are you in the US or not? I didn't realize that we already got the CDI in 2004.

His use of the £ symbols tells me he's in the UK.

Lambda sensor is the oxygen sensor fairly easy to replace under the car.
Exhaust pressure sensor close to the oxygen sensor.
