Question about brake calipers
So I'm replacing my brake pads and rotors and when I removed the pads from one of my calipers I noticed a tear in the rubber on the right side. See photo.
Does this mean it will be leaking fluid? Do I need to replace the caliper or do a resealing job? Thanks. |

It is a dust shield to keep dust out of the bore of the caliper. It will not result in immediate leakage but might lead to the piston sticking in its bore sooner rather than later as dirt gets into the bore and possibly compromises the seal of the caliper. More likely to stick rather than leak....IMHO.

and: how often do you like to mess with brakes and how are your finances?
You could pad slap it and go taking your chances on how long it will last. We don't know and most have driven worse. Alternatively, you could put a kit in it. How far are you on the learning curve? Kits which are only a slight honing, cleaning & putting a couple of seals in is sometimes easy & others more difficult with variable results depending on how bad the part is to start with. Third option is to replace 1 or more of the calipers with a) remans or b)higher quality new. A general rule is to deal with calipers in sets because the other side is likely in the same shape and will fail in short order. Two brands are available and are interchangeable but are supposed to be in sets on each end of the car. Buy locally if you opt for remans because sometimes they have to be exchanged and you don't want to get caught with shipping. You also have to decide on things like wheel bearings, hoses, caliper hardware & wear sensors. Don't forget rotors. They can usually be cut once. OE rotors were close to the same price as aftermarket the last time I checked. Call Peach & ask if they aren't listed.

Thanks so much guys, I'm a bit of a newbie with calipers. I've done pads, rotors, hoses & the MCylinder but never dealt with calipers. I'm leaning towards the idea of putting in the resealing kit but I've come across a few stories of people having troubles once they start the process (with corrosion or parts not fitting properly) and I don't want my daily driver to be out of commission for too long. It seems like it could be like opening a can of worms.

Also very tight on cash, so buying new or remans doesn't sound good, but then if I can't get to work for a few days because I'm messing with calipers then I guess I didn't save any money... Ha!

The crack is opened because you have removed the pads. I'd probly install new pads. That will close the open gap into a slit. Then I'd drive it and save some money for future work.

If you do decide to replace the Calipers. Read through my thread when I replaced my fronts.
I have ATE Calipers and what I got was some 3rd world just like ATE but not. Don`t turn in your old Calipers when you pick up the new Calipers. Wait till you get home and compare and sure they fit and work. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/374065-w123-front-brake-calipers-run-around-auto-parts-store.html Charlie

I am, as we speak, putting on new-to-me (reman) ATE calipers from NAPA. Mine were all gunked up and corroded so I opted not to even try to rebuild. I'll let you know how it goes, this is my first time, and I'm definitely a newbie. With the core charge subtracted after I return my old ones - they are like 68 bucks or something from NAPA, you can inspect them in person before leaving with them, and they are real Ate.

Thanks for the link Charlie, that sounds like it was a headache. Thanks for sharing so that the forum can learn from your experience.
And Andrew that doesn't sound too bad really...$68 is less than I expected. I may have to give my local Napa a call. I look forward to hearing how everything goes for you. @twalgamuth: I might just do that if I can't find an affordable solution for the time being...good to know it shouldn't be too big of a problem. |

Dan I just did the right front on my 82 300d. Not that big of a deal, did some reading, watched some YouTube, have the cd of the fsm (manual). I didn't repack the bearings or use a tool to adjust , I just tightened it back up by feel- based on what a friend had showed me.
For the record, your calipers look to be in much better shape than mine. |

Consider changing hoses if there is an sign of the exterior cracking when you flex the hose. I usually change hoses bust because when I get a new (old) car.

I would look in your area to see if there is a caliper rebuilder. I had mine done in Toronto, and cost was just C$60 per caliper and done while I had lunch. And they provided the proper heat shields. Apparently NAPA's rebuild do not. You have them on your current calipers and should make sure you get them on any rebuild.

semi-loaded Eclipse Caliper Se-889 Bar code #`s 8 25178 80460 7 They are ATE calipers, exactly like what I took off the 240. Even had the MB star, and were painted black. These fit all the 123`s. 2840, 280, 300 etc... Charlie

It's funny, my Napa sourced ones were original ate's painted black. Exact match, fit like a glove except only one of them had the star. Wonder if it go ground off at some point, or who knows?
They went on easy. And like Graham said, they do not give you heat shield even though they are semi loaded. Seems to be a debate both here and elsewhere about the need for those. Napa (ask them) says that you don't need them. I wish somebody sold just those, but it appears you have to buy an entire rebuild kit to find them. The only I needed to do when installing these Napa ATes was dremel sand out a little bit of built up new paint around inside edge of one of the mounting holes - just a little tight for the bolt to slip in. |

Some say they are not needed - If you bought a NEW ATE caliper it would surely have the heat shields. If you buy a rebuild kit from Mercedes - you get heat shields. Looking at the various reman calipers on-line, Cardone do not show heat shields (Probably where NAPA gets theirs). Most other sources show the heat shields in place. Kent at mercedes source has a series of videos on rebuilding calipers. Haven't seen them, but calipers on his site also show the heat shields. I would go with what a Mercedes expert says rather than a Napa clerk. You can get the heat shields from Rock (as part of a kit) - I think the Centric kit costs about $21 for two sets. Sorry - I will now get off my soapbox
