Talking to my CDI's, Diagnostic Tools

2005 E320 CDI
2007 ML320 CDI
Maybe even first gen. SLK230's

I think that it is time to invest in a system that will talk to my newer cars. I have a couple of laptops I could dedicate to the task if needed. I am looking for advice from people who own and have experience using their systems.

I think that I am looking for diagnostic tools not re-programing tools. But, I am open to all possibilities.

What system do you own and would you recommend it ?
What do I need to know before making a decision ?

Thanks,
Greg

I have one of the iCarsoft handheld units from eBay with the Mercedes software loaded onto it. I paid more for the one with the larger screen and a little more functionality.

I've diagnosed and repaired an SRS light on my CDI (which essentially paid for the tool out of the gate) and I think you were involved in a thread where I used the datastream function to determine a coolant temp sensor was failing and screwing everything up.

It can also put the SBC system into service mode.

Its a lot easier to move around than a laptop and I'm not incredibly computer savvy to begin with, but I'm sure you could get more functionality out of a laptop based software.

You cannot code with iCarsoft. But for around ~$200 I'm very happy with what I have.

I'm sure there are much more in depth products with much greater capability, but for the money and ease, I'm quite pleased. I think shertex picked one up as well.

Yes, I got the MBii...seemed to be worth the little bit of extra money over the i980. Easy to use, lots of bang for the buck.

Thanks,

I'm following this.

My problem is I have a 98 W210 where they were still running individual leads from each system to the 38 pin connector and there are not many options there. Only the most rudimentary data comes through the OBDII port.

Then I have the super computer on wheels 2008 ML320 where it all goes through the OBDII port.

And the 124 that has blink diagnostics that can be read with a home made blink tool.

I have the maxi das. It was 800 on eBay brand new but a returned item. It works for the w210 and up nicely.

Also it works for Vw Bmw and every car almost. Lots of various adapters for various cars.
It really sucks when an easy part to replace has to be coded and you can't do it. I'm interested in what "coding" or "enabling" functions. I read the Sbc had to be "coded" and figured I couldn't do it so took it to a shop. I bet I could have done it though. The maxi can do some changing of options I know.

The maxi das does have capability to deal with the SBC system in regards to bleeding, turning off, etc....

Last year I bought a used D630 then bought the SC Connect from MB Star.

I have about 650 into the system. Takes some effort to get it started, but once all of the codes are in, all seems to work quite well.

Works great on my 05 E320 CDI

If I were to get the MB II Isoft setup, could I change my own injector? Service Brakes?
My trusted indy is in the hospital, and may never return to work.

MBii I980 arrived today.

2005 E320 CDI
Cleared the Brake system error from what seemed to be a low voltage situation that happened when I changed the lawn mower battery.

2007 ML 320 CDI
Found out exactly which Parktronic sensor was faulty. I will order and replace and get the Parktronic back.

1998 SLK230
It did not communicate with the car's computer. I will call the customer service number for the unit and see if they can help. Might be too early of a car to expect much.

Your 98 SLK is an R170 right?

If so that has a lot of the same electrical systems as the W210.

The problem with these older models is that the individual computers do not go back to the OBDII port. Each module has a dedicated pin on the 38 pin plug under the hood for its fault diagnosis.

Only the federally mandated minimum went to the OBD port on these models - mostly emissions related data.

When my 210 got hit last winter in the door, the body shop disconnected the door air bag while the battery was still connected. This sets a permanent fault in the air bag module.
They had a fairly sophisticated scanner but could not clear the air bag fault so I had to take it to the local MB dealer.

In less time than it took me to finish my cup of coffee in the waiting room they cleared not only the air bag fault but a bunch of other cob webs in the system with their Xentry computer. I got a 4 page print out of old faults that had been registered.

Makes me wonder what sorts of code cob webs live in MY 98.....
