4-speed manual transmission from an 1985 w201

I have seen people put the manual 5 speed into a w124, but not a lot of 4 speeds.

I was able to pull a 4 speed transmission today from a 1985 w201 190e gas.

I got the transmission, shift cluster, pedal cluster, clutch master and slave, and transmission support bar.
Someone had taken the driveline.

I am thinking of trying to put this in my 1987 300td wagon maybe later this summer.

what state do you reside in? I have a 1986 190e that has a 5 speed, that i was going to put in my 1995 e300D, but sold the car before the swap happened. I am offering you the car for parts if you need them.

A 4spd? That's kind of rare. It must've been a grey market import.

Shorter gearbox than the five speeds - might be the same length as the automatic 722.4 fitted - might not...

...hmmm could be a bit tricky...

...then there's the flywheel...

...and...

...and...

You mean besides better acceleration, more power to the wheels, better fuel economy and more fun to drive?

Ok thats on the pros side ,what are the cons to getting it setup ,any major hurtles.I do remember a wagon that was done ,I was given a test drive in it ,the one part that he had mention was a match balancing of the flywheel and something about having the right one .

I had the flywheel from my donor OM616 balanced to match my auto flywheel on my OM616 however the M103 swap I did had a neutral balanced flywheel so it was not necessary to have it balanced. For both of my swaps I had a donor car on hand so I was able to see how and where everything went together which made the swap much easier. I also didn't need to modify any driveshafts.

Stupid me. I was wrong. It is a 5 speed. A 717.411 - I just listened to the other guy I was with when he said 4 speed.

I told a friend that it (717.411) would bolt up as a swap for a failed auto trans (300d).
After he sources the same list of items that you have, plus the flywheel/pressure plate combo
he finds that in the FSM (paper copy) that this transmission is not recommended
because its(condensed version) "weak in fifth gear" European five speeds are larger and
more robust. will ask for page numbers and report back

My 190e 5spd has 32k miles behind my om603 turbo without issue. There is no euro vs US 5spd. MB simply didn't build a factory turbo diesel manual until late into the w202/w210 era.

If you want to stick that 5spd behind an om603, there's a list of the parts you'll need in my build thread.

It takes a bit of mix and match but its doable without any custom parts.

I think I may try that this summer.

If I cant find the right drive shaft I thought about building a small drive shaft extension. I have access to a machine shop and can cnc a small shaft, I will look for a correct drive shaft. It sucks that someone pulled the DS from the 190 before I got there. Although I am super happy I got all the parts I did so I can live with it being gone.

The clutch and flywheel is too small for your 603 engine you need a flywheel and clutch to be at least 9 inches the 190 flywheel you have is 8.5 inches
