87 300SDL with 85k miles...take a look!

Hey, just found this one:

http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=89768507&dealer_id=&certified=n&max_price=&start_year=1982&end_year=2003&addres s=68066&search_type=used&make=MB&model=300SDL&min_price=&distance=any&advcd_on=n&advanced=n&sort_typ e=mileage&=&color=&car_year=1987&ac_afflt=none

www.autotrader.com - 87 300SDL with 85k miles. $11,500, not bad!

Not bad but I'd be wary of a car with that low of original miles unless you could absolutely verify ALL the past maintenance with accurate documentation. Sometimes the low milers are not as good as the 200,000 milers.

Good point, sir!

Good point. One of the things that impressed me about the 45k mile 87 I bought last year was the lady of the house told me she drove it every week because you should not "NOT" drive a car.

Also, I got the records from the MBenz dealer, where they had the service done.

But, you are right - many times the low mileage ones are a wreck. One I know about was parked for 13 years! No thanks!

Nice car! I just bought one yesterday. 87 300SDL Dark Grey/Grey Leather interior. It has 152K on the clock. Very smooth engine. Everything works. Cold AC.

It has some knocking noise from front driver side whenever I go over a speed bump or apply brake at low speed. Has anyone experienced this? thanks!

Ball joint.

Thanks! TD. I'll tackle this on the weekend! Hopefully, it's not the lower control bushing.

85k , NJ and Smoked windows.

85K, smoked windows and in NJ Hmmmm. Doesn't sound like a little old lady driver.. I'd be very cautious on this one.

Glad I don't live in NJ. Did anybody notice the price for diesel on that photo?

As for the tinted windows, they don't bother me. Many people that I know have thier windows tinted to protect the interiors - and it works.

I would be more apt to have the vehicle VERY thoroughly inspected to insure that it was in good operational order mechanically if the whole car looks as good as the one photo indicates.

It's pretty close to me, if anyone is serious I can go take a look at it.

IMHO, there is -no way- it has 85K miles on it.

Just recently, I went and looked at a 87 300SDL with a supposed "235K" on it. Sure, the odometer said "235,xxx" but the little oil change sticker in the corner of the windsheild said "Next service due at 283,000 miles".

There is -alot- of odometer fraud in this area.

DrT 05-16-2002 02:46 AM

Yes, there is fraud.....but look at the records....

Check the records.

Twenty some years ago I bought a truck that had "50k" miles on it. In the glove box I found a receipt for a service shop that said 97k. I took it back the next day!

So, you can maybe tell.

These low mileage cars are around. In the Sioux Falls paper there is a 1990 Buick Park Avenue with 50k miles on it for sale right now.

Why would it be a big deal...235k vs. 285k????

Keep thinking,

turbodiesel 05-16-2002 02:48 AM

Well, thats 50,000 miles difference, alot IMHO.

I can usually tell by looking inside how many miles the car has, and on this car 150K would not be beliveable, so you go for what is, and 235K was the number. I would have belived it if it was not for the oil change sticker.

DrT 05-16-2002 02:53 AM

Yes, Turbo, but.......

Yes, it is 50k miles, but as a percentage it's not as much is my point.

Like 30k vs 80k IS a big deal!

But, we can have differences of opinion here...hopefully! LOL

turbodiesel 05-16-2002 02:56 AM

I see what you're saying but regaurdless of how far he rolled it back, if he took the time to do that, and hide the true mileage, what else is he hiding from me?

DrT 05-16-2002 03:07 AM

Yes, if he lied there, walk away, no doubt....

Yes, he would likely be lying about other things.

In 1976 my brother bought a Mazda truck for $1500.00 in central Nebraska. I went with him to pick it up.

Drove it home (100 miles) and the engine blew up.

Called the bank, stopped payment on the check. Then, called the seller and told him. He'd come get it, not an argument at all.

He knew something was wrong, agree?

My point was basically that once the miles are that high, the mileage alone would not be a big deal.
