115 motor transplanted to later model?

Hi all,

I have a great motor from a '74 240d, wondering if it will seamlessly fit into a '83 240d. I found a much nicer body/chassis and don't want the motor to go to waste. Is this a seamless transition? Thanks...

Two questions:

Is the '83 stick or auto?

Are you planning to swap the motor and transmission or just the motor?

It is not a seamless interchange as the AC mounts and power steering are different. Also oil filter placement. better to sell it so someone who needs a 115 motor and buy a good motor to fit the 83.

I think the quality and the power of a 1981-83 240d engine might be superior as well.

Great, thanks guys. I had a feeling it wouldn't be a seamless swap. I may just look for a good-condition 115 body to put my motor into. Many thanks.

Good choice. Watch out for rust they are much less protected than the later cars. They drive nice though.

I also think so as well. Actually personally I preffer the 114 that is the same chassis as the 115 for driving sensation over the 123s. Except for them having gas engines. Also I like the road feel of the 240d 123s as well over the 300d 123s. Although the only real difference I am aware of is the lighter engine in the 240ds.

This far north it is now very rare to see a 114-115 car as the rust has claimed them long ago in our salt belt. Mercedes rust protection of those cars was perhaps a good sound dampening medium. At the same time it really was a disaster when it came to rust protection. If the 114-115 were not the rust champions of the world they were not far behind.

A historical note perhaps on the diesel 115s. When they were selling new in the Toronto, Canada area. Sales where an issue so to get rid of them the dealer and manufacturer deeply discounted the prices I remember.

Who knew or could have even imagined what a 300 gullwing or roadster would eventually be worth either. . They were just sitting in the used car section of the dealership as well.

The wife and myself used to drop by the dealership from time to time. Their new products were too rich for us back then. I liked the brand ever since our first and only fintail. What we could afford and drove as our newer cars where Volkswagons. Put fifty thousand miles on them and add about 400.00 to 600.00 and drive away with another new one. Almost insane by comparison with todays situation.

I see it as just an era that people may never see occur again. I just hope that twenty years or more in the future the people that survive the wife and myself. Will not have to consider today as the cheaper old days as well. Seen as the time when they were almost giving things away in comparison in retrospect.
