Late W124 Relays Behind Instrument Cluster

1 Attachment(s)
My 1995 E300D (W1214, OM606NA) has two relays on the left side and behind (really, in front of) the instrument cluster. My older W124 (1987 300D Turbo) didn't have these relays. Any idea what they're for?

The silver one (5 pins, SPDT) is 001-542-02-19 and the blue one (3 pins, SPST) is 001-542-99-19.

Not sure on blue, but IIRC the silver is for the engine immobilizer, I had to jump a couple pins on mine as it was malfunctioning and keepiyme from starting my car.

Does your car have a climate control Rest switch?

Unfortunately not. I looked at acquiring all the bits and pieces of the European factory REST set-up. I also designed my own circuit, fairly easy to do, decided I didn't need a REST function enough to make the modifications.

Expletive Deleted....I just tried to do the same thing as you to bypass the K49 relay. Only problem is that I thought the K49 relay was the blue one. Now my tach isn't working, and I'm not sure if it is related or if I did something else while pulling the cluster. I also noticed that the person who sold me the car a while back apparently pulled the bulb from the check engine light. How thoughtful of them to not burden me with such an annoying and distracting light on my dashboard. If I still had their contact information I would probably tell them just how much I appreciate that wonderful courtesy, and their taking the time to consider my welfare. By the way...how did you jumper yours? I know which pins to jumper 87 & 30 if my memory serves me. I have the proper ones written down somewhere, but what did you actually use? You did have to plug the relay back in afterwards correct? I was thinking that a piece of 16-20 gauge wire would probably work. I don't happen to have any at the moment, and I was considering using an upholstery staple from a staple gun that I cleaned the coating off of with acetone. I've done that on breadboards before, and it worked fine. Not sure if it would work in this situation, or if I should just suck it up and spend the $0.03 on 2" of wire.

Whew....I read another forum, and discovered that apparently fuse #5 also controls at least some portions of the instrument cluster including the tach. A quick replacement of fuse 5 fixed my tach problem, and I was then able to pull the proper relay out to jumper. Once I get a bit of wire that is.
