fuel tank plug nut size, '75 300d

Hi,
I'm going to remove the plug in the middle of the tank on my '75 300d. My calipers read about .95 inches or 24 mm. does that sound right to you?
I heard someone say to stick a 7/8" nut in there but that's more like .875. Would this be too sloppy?

If it's .95" a 15/16" would be tighter...

That's sorta what I'm thinking, I just saw the other number mentioned on the forum somewhere. Now that I think about it, I should just get both while I'm at the store.

Hmm. 7/8 was the magic number. Maybe I need to calibrate my caliper.
