W126 (original) Headlight Assemblies Wanted

Hello All,

I just arrived back in Canada :-) with my 1981 300SD. While in Europe I converted the headlights to Euro spec ones and sold the original headlight assemblies to a chap in the UK. Unfortunately Euro spec are not allowed under the province of Nova Scotia motor vehicle inspection standards. :-(

So, to obtain an inspection certificate I require a set of original Canadian / US headlight / fog light assemblies. I do not require the turn signal assemblies.

If you have a decent set that I can purchase, please send me a PM with the price, we'll figure out the shipping costs later. These headlights will be installed temporarily to pass the inspection and replaced with the Euro ones as soon as I get home. I'll 're-use' them every two years when the inspection renewal is required.

I have a decent set and I am about three miles outside Amherst in the border area with New Bruinswick . The glass lens state bosh h4 in the middle. I need your help in identification of euro or north American.

I never owned any 126s other than this gas one we parted out. If the north American ones have sealed beams you are out of luck with me. And my suspicion is they do.

The reflectors looked really good from what I saw through the glass. There is not even a small pit or indication of weathering on the glass either. They are off a 110 K mile car because of front suspension mounting rust plus other too well established rust underneath. Yes this was a real 110K car.

Sad to part that car as it was so good otherwise. I figured someone unfortunately parked it in grass.

If you just had the two year safety check to pass it suprised me the mechanic just did not let it pass. Or even that he was aware that your lights were technically illegal here. Cheapest might be to ask around if someone else may let them pass. Cheapest option for you? It is what I would try. Welcome to the forum.

I think normally you would not run across that problem here usually unless the government had some form of import deal you are subject to. Ask you friends who will pass almost anything unless it is ridiculous. My guy would for example probably not even noticing the lights and even if he did still pass it. He probably does not even know what a 126 looks like. Mind what their lights look like.

The last few sentences where just to give you a thought. Now if you really want a set with sealed beams put a request in the parts for sale and wanted section of the forum.. There should be a lot of ones that would meet your needs that are pretty far gone and nobody really wants other than you.

Hello Barry,

Thanks for your e-mail.

The fact that your covers are glass and state Bosch H4 leads me to believe they are Euro lights. They will be a single glass lens that covers the headlight reflector as well as the fog lamp. The original W126 lights used a rectangular sealed beam unit that was replaceable. The Bosch headlights use a replaceable H4 (9003) bulb.

If I'm not successful restoring the headlights I just bought (see below), I will give you a shout.

The Mercedes dealer that was doing the inspection won't approve E code headlights. They must have a DOT marking. So as mentioned, I'll use the originals assemblies to get the car through inspection. Once I have the certificate I'll reinstall the Euro lights. I'll keep the originals in case I run into this issue in the future.

Hello T. Walgamuth,

Appreciate your e-mail.

Hello All,

Quick update to let you know I was able to find a pair of headlight assemblies. A chap about 120 km (80 mi), from where I live was parting out a 300SD. W126 are very rare in this neck of the woods so I lucked out. The assemblies were rough but with a little elbow grease I can have a set of usable lights.

To everyone that read the post - thank you for your consideration.

Mercedes dealer safety inspection for dollars? I thought it was funny as most normal inspection places here would have let them through. They would have just thought they were original equipment as some foreign cars do look strange to many.

Also the vast majority of newer cars have had non sealed beam headlights for years. Anyways you have a solution.
