1984 300 TD injection pump replacement

I'm in the process of replacing injection pump, I purchased a used one from a '84 300 SD but it has an electrical connection on the inside front , facing the engine, that my original pump does not have, this is a wire with plug, anyone know what this is for & if
I can use this pump without connecting that wire?

Yes, will work fine. That cable is for the "rack position sensor", which is part of the emissions controls (1984-85). The only downside is that the sensor makes it harder to get a socket wrench on one of the IP mounting bolts.

I think it might also be used to turn off the AC compressor under hard acceleration via the Klima relay box (you don't have). I went the other way, installing an earlier engine in my 1985 CA 300D.

Smile Thanks Bill

thought I'd be OK but reassuring to get info from you, could that be removed to make getting to the mounting bolt easier?

timing injection pump

I replaced original pump 8 years ago with an earlier one that did not have slot for timing tool, so I timed it with drip method, now replacing with this later one do I need to buy the locking pin or can I do it again by drip method, anyone with tool willing to lend me?

I haven`t read the Rack Position Sensor has anything to with the Klima or the AC.

The RPS send a signal to the Black Box in the 84/85 pass side kick panel.
It is for the EGR operation.

It can be eliminated and the Pump will work just fine.

The Pump you have for the 84/85 has a port on the side for the RIV timing tool.
yes you can still use the drip method to time the engine.

IP Timing

I decided to get the RIV tool & time the way this IP was designed to be timed instead of using the drip method. When I installed the early type IP that didn't have the port for timing I advanced the timing by moving the IP shaft but as I'm now using an IP with the slot I don't believe I can do that so do I set engine at 14% ATDC or 16% ATDC to compensate for timing chain stretch instead of the specified 15%?

increasing the degrees 'before top dead center' makes the injection earlier.

Decreasing the degrees After top dead center will accomplish the same.

14 deg ATDC will make injection earlier or compensate for chain wear.

Where did you get your RIV tool?

$30.34 for the tool? That is an unbelievable price. They were around 3 - $400 range last time I checked.

Did a Google search and this site has them for $695.

Does your look like this?

Couple of interesting threads on the RIV tool.

What I purchased & used successfully was just a mechanical pin, not an electronic tool, worked fine & car runs great:
