Turbo Howl and Oil Use OM606

Starting doing it yesterday when I started driving i. Its starting to use oil and smoke at WOT. No more than minimal turbo play, and full power and boost. Should I order a turbo rebuild kit with the thrust bearings and journal bearings and all the seals? Cause it sounds like blown turbo seals right? Just looking for a second opinion. Also is it a KKK K14 Turbo?

Btw its a 99 E300

A "New" Turbo lists for around $1100.00

Yeah, Brother.
If it's Howling ...It's not Happy.

If a rebuild is within your expertise ,that's the least expensive route.

If a "Cartridge" is available it'll cost a little more than the Self rebuild
But it'll just be a matter of R+R ing the housings.

I can't find the Turbo Listed @ "Turbomasters"
All turbos for Mercedes Benz passenger cars and vans - Applications - TurboMaster
Maybe you can ?

Errrrk! Only "Remanufactured" may still be available.

People have installd the bearing and seal kits and been fine. A few have still had issues.

I believe Valve Stem Seals can also cause Oil consumption but don't know any particular way to tell withoug removing the Intake and exhaust manifolds and taking a look for Oil build up on the Valves.

If the Exhaust side of the turbo is leaking Oil when you view the exhaust end the carbon will be shiny. Normaly it is dry and flat black colored.

A few members have had the little O-ring in the Fuel Supply/ Lift Pump go bad and had is suck in Oil from the inside of the Fuel Injection Pump. However, I can't remmember they saying they had smoke from that.

Hey there guys thank you for the responses. I'm gonna try the cheap rebuild first. The fins looks awesome, as well as the housing and minimal shaft play. I'm hoping its the seals of the turbo. I don't believe its valve seals because if I only smoke under boost, and not idle. With my experience (I'm handy, but not a mechanic yet, I'm in school for it) bad valve stem seals cause black smoke at idle. What do you mean by cartrige?

Have you checked the air filter inlet and filter and trunking to turbo , could possibly be struggling for air and drawing hard on crankcase fumes to get oil to burn.
I am only suggesting this as these turbo's usually go forever and to start using oil quickly would possibly point to a different cause rather than worn seals.

A Cartridge (assembly) on a turbo charger is every thing accept your Exhaust and Turbine housing. Meaning you get the Bearing Housing and all the parts in it and your Turbine and Compressor Wheel all assembled.

All you need to do is install your Exhaust and Compressor Housing making sure they go back on in the same position as the originals and making sure the turbine and compressor wheel do not rub on the housings.

When you pull the Turbo you should be able to tell. If it is the Valve Stem on the Exhaust side the exhaust ports in the head will be shiny instead of dry flat black colored.
It is harder to tell on the Intake Ports. Look for a build up of dried Oil on the inner valve faces.

Murkybenz. I did check the air filter house and the tube going to the turbo. There is no obstructions and the air filter is prettu clean. I'm surprised the turbo is having issues as well. This car has always been well maintianed and driven nicely. What shoukd i look for at the trunking to turbo? I still have yet to take it apart

Look for any point it could be weak and being sucked flat, this would make it draw harder suction on the crank case breather which would draw more fumes / mist from crankcase.
Possible the breather unit under engine cover is bad ???, not sure if they can go bad.
Its just that these turbo's never really get bad press.

For anyone who has this problem I wanted to update it... I'm a total idiot! The howling was the fan, the oil consumption was my oil pan gasket.. I replaced it and all is well. I checked the shaft play and the fins and it's in great shape for a 183000 mile turbo. There's barely any slack in the shaft up and down side to side.
