Oil

I was searching and not finding, so...

I found a Valvoline product I've never seen before at the local Wal-Mart. I can't even find it on the Valvoline website. Anyone ever seen (or better) used this?

Valvoline Heavy Duty with MaxLife Technology High Mileage 15W-40 Motor Oil, 1 Gallon - Walmart.com

I just bought a couple gallons myself. It is labled "heavy duty diesel max life synthetic blend" and touts "NEW 25% greater wear protection". I use synthetic in my Mercedes, but I was looking for a diesel oil to use in my old Bronco in hopes it would clean it out better than the gasser oil I have been using. I have always had a soft spot in my head for Valvoline products.

Over the winter I changed from DELO 15w-40 conventional to Rotella T6 5w-40 synthetic.
I was having starting issues below 20 degrees, slow cranking an a grumpy idle. With the switch to synthetic I had no starting issues all the way down to -20. It didn't lower my hot oil pressure, either. Still right at 1.5 bar.

It's a "synthetic blend," which means—what?—anything?—nothing? Since it's rated 15W-40, it sounds more like a $12/gallon conventional diesel oil being sold for $15.

With the big "Heavy Duty Diesel"

emblazoned on the front of the jug, I imagine it would be fine. Although I don't know what "technology" is used for "Max Life". I thought maximum life came from synthetic oils.
I prefer Valvoline/ Napa (made by Ashland Oil, the Valvoline people) because it seems quite resistant to leaving deposits in the engines I have driven, so I figure that it is carrying that sludge to be wrung out in the filter. Where I prefer it to be.
Whatever diesel oil you use, change it regularly; if you can't do an oil change, at least replace the filter.

A dumb question. If Great Britain pulls out of the EU as scheduled, what happens to the use of this (and, I suppose, other) specs, agreed-upon processes, etc? Seems like a ton of (to quote Pooh) "bother".

I believe it means that a dollop of synthetic oil was added to predominately dino oil. This is a "high mileage" oil which means a sniff of seal softener was also added. There's your $3.

Hello Dan, nothing really, the EU was just one big gravy train for politicians to hide in. The bottom line is EU countries need UK far more, as we import greater (by some margin) than exports.

Going back to the ACEA oil specs, do Vavoline and others not quote this on their web site/cans for comparison?

Dan, ACEA listed by brand (perhaps limited to UK, not sure)

Rotella T is labeled ACEA E9, but in tiny type way under the API ratings, of which there is a long series of numbers.

ACEA E9 seems to be formulated for the North American vehicle market.

https://www.lubrizol.com/EngineOilAdditives/ACEA/Sequences/ACEA-E9-12.html

It looks as though they are using the ACEA spec even though primarily Euro based.
