W124 V8 FUEL TANK IN A W124 300D?

I have a 91 300d with a rotten fuel tank.
Went to Pik a Part and got a good w124 400e tank. Tank looks to be the
same, but there is a large white plastic piece over the fuel strainer in the
400e tank-?? Also the filler neck of course has the gas restricker
piece unlike the diesel filler neck. Tank fuel strainer will be changed to
the diesel version. Fuel sender tube looks to be the same.
Anyway to use the 400e tank
thx a bunch
Steve Craig

The white plastic cover is a plenum chamber, it holds a reservoir of fuel when cornering or accelerating, it also has the fuel return in there somewhere to heat fuel.

The thing to watch out on the petrol tank, is what type of lining does it have.

Quite a few users on the alternative fuel forum report tank liners coming away when using bio diesel or even just veg oil.

I can't speak specifically to the 124 tanks, but in a general sense gas tanks can be used as fuel tanks.

As an example, I'm using the stock gas tank from the 380SL, in my 107 diesel conversion. The conversion now has over 100k miles on it with no issues whatever.

As you pointed out a few things are needed though. The filler restrictor is easily removed - mine was plastic and came right out. The fuel strainer is very different in the mesh used, so use the diesel one. I removed all the vapor recovery stuff and just left one vent on the top.

Years ago I did diesel conversions on a Chevy Vega and a Ford Econoline and used stock tanks without issue.

If there is something unique about the 124 tank I'm sure someone will point that out.

The "guide funnel" (as it is called) is unique to the gasoline-engined cars. In an E420 it is 116-470-01-29 and probably is common to all cars made since EPA started cracking down on evaporating fumes. That part is not part of diesel fuel tanks; I would hope it would be possible to pry it out and throw it away.

Could you please give me the "easily removed" gas funnel neck elimination removal guide-lol. I know I can get it out, but don't want plastic bits all in the tank to remove later

The 90L tank I pulled out of a 95 e300 has it. I had to fish out those "magic beads" around the damn thing.

Here it is in a euro 300td.

There is no lining that I can see, only bare metal.
Should I try to take out that chamber----there are several hoses attached as you can see in the picture. I would like to just leave all of that if possible.
The exterior of the tank is identical. That chamber is way too big to take out
through the fuel sender hole by the way--it would have to come out in pieces

1)Remove gas strainer and put in diesel strainer
2)Remove the filler neck restricter

anything else guys to make this a go---

I just carefully drilled it out. It was surprisingly easy.

If you happen to get a couple of flakes in the tank (which you probably won't), it's not a big deal - they'll get caught by the strainer.

Not sure how many gals it holds, but the tank externally looks the same as the old 300d tank, and I don't how many it
held because the fuel sender and tank was buggered up and I never filled it up completely-----just got this buggy, and trying to bring it up to speed-----it has some
issues, but the car has a 5spd conversion---that was the selling point for me

Included attch is the factory sticker on the 400e tank---hope you can make it out and you know what to look for

UPDATE----NOT POSITIVE IT IS CORRECT BUT--18.5 gallons including 2.4 gallon reserve
