Getting ready to remove the IP

Quick question:

I am getting ready to pull the IP out of my car due to a leaking element and was wondering if it matters if I set the engine timing to the 24 degrees before I pull the IP or can it wait until I reinstall it?

Watch this YouTube, it explains it all. This is on an OM606 but should be the same principle for your engine.

You do want to set it where the manual says.

OP needs the locking tool. The engine needs to be turned until the tang shows up then lock down the pump. And the engine not disturbed again until the IP returned.

This model IP has no provision for the locking tool

Edit: I found a locking tool for the early IP's; has anyone used one for a W114/W115?
