W140 om603 into W124 300D swap questions

After working long and hard to get my W140 S350 on the road, I was able to drive it for about a month before someone decided to pull in front of me because they were late for work. The vehicle was totaled out, but the damage was only to the hood and radiator/core support (collision happened at about 5mph), so the drivetrain is still in perfect condition.

Instead of letting the car go to the scrapyard, I bought it back to let it live again. It just so happens that a good friend of mine had an '87 300D with a bad engine, so I bought that and am working on getting my engine out at the moment.

My questions regarding the swap are:

1. Will the om603.97x exhaust maifold work in the 300D's engine bay? They look like they place the turbo in the same spot, but the manifold on the 300D is a lot more complex.

2. The dipsticks are in different location, does this mean that the oil pans are different?

3. Does the air flow meter on the 300D do anything?

4. I see that the W140 has the 722.3 transmission, but the W124 shows both the 722.3 and 722.4 as available. Are any of these transmissions better than the others or are they all pretty much the same?

5. I have read that the differential in the W140 is one of the better ones, will this fit into a W124?

I really appreciate any help that you're willing to give, this forum has been a life saver in the past!

If it was me, I would be finding a front clip from a 140 and putting the 140 back on the road.

92 140 >> 87 300D all day long.

Given the budget and value of these two cars, it doesn't make much sense to put the work into the W140. The time on the frame machine to straighten out the front rails alone would be more than I paid for the car.

While I really did enjoy driving the W140, my daily commute commands a vehicle that gets better fuel economy, thus going with the W124.

Besides, I feel the OM603 really doesn't do the W140 justice. I would much rather save the money for an S500 or S600 down the road.

1) A forum member has done this, says that the heat shielding all fits with the W140 exhaust manifold on the engine.

2) The oil pans are different. The W140 has a 3.5L engine, with longer stroke, which included a windage tray under the crank and the baffles machined away in the oil pan. Also, the 603.971 has no side oil pan. You will want to modify the 3.0L / 603.960 pan to clear the windage tray and use the 3.0 dipstick assembly.

3) Air flow meter is for the '87's emission controls, if your EGR is not functional it will do nothing except add weight and complexity under the hood.

4) The 3.5L engine has a lower RPM range, IIRC around 350rpm? Anyway, you will need to figure out how to run the '87's transmission (matches the driveshaft flange, and the speedometer drive) with the '92 torque converter and ?? to match shift RPMs, or use the entire '87 transmission and modify the max. RPM so that it will shift at full-throttle. Give the spare trans to me as I might need one for a project some day.

5) The W140 differential will not bolt in, the 124 differential should be plenty stout for the OM603.

The exhaust manifold for the 603.97 is waaay too simple for you. Send it to me and I will send you the exhaust manifold for my 603.960.
