SBC Brake Service - Pads/Rotors

So the brake pad wear light is coming on on my 06 CDI and I feel some warped rotor type pulsation. So it is time for at least front brakes.

Has anyone here actually done brakes on their SBC car?

I am reading how-to's online and it seems people are doing it without the use of a scan tool. I have the iCarsoft MBII software and it has a function where it can disable the SBC system and reset the padwear light. Has anyone used a scan tool to turn off the SBC and service the brakes, or should I use the internet/youtube proscribed "unplug everything and put the key far far away from the car while you work on it" method.

Any insights from people who have actually done it?

I found this write up, which shows the SBC system going into the same mode that my scanner can do. Does anyone know if you leave the car keyed on and the scanner hooked up to keep it disabled, or if I disable, then key the car off, will it stay disabled?

http://fotifixes.com/2012/09/03/how-to-change-break-pads-and-discs-on-a-mercedes-e-class-w211-with-sbc-brakes/

My scan tool has this option

Then the car goes into this mode

I guess my question is, do I trust carsoft to have relaxed the SBC system, or should I just unplug the unit like other people are doing.

Wow; it is just getting too complicated to work on cars nowdays. Even the brakes.

Any idea what the newest ML is that I can buy that does not have so much of the computer stuff?

Oops; I thought you had a 2006 ML.

I unplugged the unit on my 03 E55 whenever I serviced the brakes! My friend who is a tech at the dealer told me to do this if I don't have access to an MB SDS.

I like my fingers too much to trust anything but actually unplugging the unit.

The W163 and W164 don't have SBC.

I'm super happy with my 07 ML320 CDI - awesome fuel mileage, plenty of power, and very comfortable. Gets around 20-22mpg putting around in the city but gets 26-30mpg on the freeway depending on traffic and how fast I'm going. Not too shabby for an SUV with AWD!

2006 E320 CDI. No ML has SBC.

If you don't like computers you should just stay with 1st gen 126s. That being said, only CDIs have the SBC in terms of Benz diesels in the US. 03-06 W211s have it, 07-09 does not, so BlueTec E320s do not have SBC.

SBC is a super advanced system that does a lot of cool things, however I think Bosch hadn't totally realized they can effect most of the functions SBC has through a more standard style ABS pump setup with a mechanical master cylinder.

All of this computer stuff is manageable, there is info out there, and the tools are available.

Doesn't bother me, I just want to know the proper way to use the tools I have access too.

Thanks for the input Justin, I'll probably disable it in SDS, then unplug the unit as well. My scanner can clear whatever related SBC codes I may create by messing with it.

I recall reading a safety bulletin somewhere not specifically related to mercedes. The just of it was should you disable the brakes using software a battery charger should be placed on the battery during the brake work. If the battery is low in voltage or should brown out unpredictable devices can be actuated. Just a caution I have not had the opportunity to work on SBC systems.

What I have read about SBC is you need to not only disconnect the main battery, but also the small motorcycle sized battery under the hood (the backup battery for the SBC) to ensure zero power can go to the SBC and attempt the snap the calipers shut.

But I will look for into what you're saying, I appreciate the insights.

Then you're in for a wait then. Unplug batteries and then go and have a beer.

The SBC circuit has its own capacitors which acts as a temporary battery in event of an accident (in some case it shears the battery wires) so it can still actuate the brakes with no power.

Those capacitors take a while to drain, so take your sweet time drinking a beer or two before working on it.

I've done all my own brake work. To disable the SBC, make sure key is NOT in ignition, pull up on slide lock of black multi-pin connector at back of SBC unit, remove connector and position connector off to the side. Do the brake work, and reconnect black connector before starting vehicle. It's as simple as that.
