Engine trouble 617 motor

Was on a 700 mile trip and 450 miles into the trip I got a bad tapping sound from top of motor, big loss of power, and smoke out the back. I chose to go on as I was about 200 miles away from destination. What are some thoughts as to what is wrong and how to fix? Since I am not at home have limited tools. My thought im hoping is that a valve loosened up out of adjustment. A friend of mine thinks a broken valve spring or burnt valve. Any one close to the Allentown PA. area that could help me get this sorted out of do you think I could try to make it 700 miles home to In. I have to get back there by Mon.

It should not be too much trouble to remove the valve cover and take a look.

Also look for cracked camshaft bearing tower or camshaft.

Line up the timing mark on the back of the Camshaft Gear with the front bearing tower mark and look down and see how close it is to OT on the Crank Damper.

Tell us what you see, Yuke. I does not sound good. Hope for the best. Sounds to me like the valve and a piston had a face to face meeting.

I agree. A tapping sound usually doesn't indicate a serious engine problem and likely in the upper valve train, which can be fixed fairly easy w/ engine in car. Worst-case would be a broken aluminum post. Those unbolt easy, but you would need a junkyard replacement. Also, first rotate the engine until the camshaft mark is on the alignment mark so you put everything back clocked the same way. I rotate the engine using the bolt on the power steering pulley.

A broken valve spring can also be replaced w/ engine in car, but be careful not to let the valve drop down into the cylinder or you'll have big problems. Rotate until you know the piston is at the top to prevent that and hold the valve stem w/ a strong magnet when you first verify that.

Ok this is what I found out today. Went to Wally world and picked up 2 (14)mm wrenches grinded, heater, bent them to what i need all the valve clearances were off except 1 but all had some clearance telling me All valves were closing. I adjusted them shooting for .004 intake .012 exhaust or 10-35mm. When I started her up still had same sharp tap I guess like an injector nailing. When I loosened injector nuts 1 at a time I narrowed it down to 4th injector back. I guess rookie I will look for a used injector and see what happens. Before this happened I had all the injectors out they were popping at 1650 I shimmed them to pop at 1950. Maybe I goofed that one up could that cause the noise I am describing like nailing? Maybe I could take a video and post it tomorrow while I try to hunt down another injector. Keep the ideas coming I have to get this fixed by Mon to drive back home.

Yes I thought of switching one with #5 one but I still might need another one if I cannot see anything wrong with mine. I do know I added a (2)mm extra shim in that one too get it to pop at 1950 psi. Thanks for the ideas will get back with my findings tomorrow oh is it miserly hot here in eastern PA.

Nailing can also be from a compression problem, which is annoying since it can be hard to tell what the cause is. Hopefully swapping the injector will give you a definite answer.

If you take the injector(s) out, definitely have a good look at the prechamber(s) and make sure everything is still solid in there.
