Rebooting a pair of axle shafts...How much oil is required in each can?

Prior to clamping the rubber boot to the lip of the can should I fill each can half way to the seam? Fill it completely? Is the quantity specified anywhere?
I could use grease, but prefer to replace with oil as it was originally.
