going after the vibration.....
Alright.. so i guess enough ... my 240d just vibrates like crazy. I have a 300tdt and it drive so smoothly so i know that the 240d should not be vibrating as crazily as it is.
What i have done. 1. replaced motor mounts (lemfoerder) 2. replaced trans mount 3. valve adjustment 4. timing chain (3 degrees stretch) 5. 1L diesel purge 6. new spin on and inline fuel filter I have tried to increase the idle and when i do that the engine stops visually shaking. The issue that i am complaining about is the chassis vibration. I can feel it in my feet, in the steering wheel, and sometimes even in the seat cushion. It is a strong vibration and not a 'shake.' I can feel this in neutral or when under load. If i turn the idle up sometimes the vibration actually gets worse. The next steps were going to be rebuild the injectors or maybe recalibrate the pump. I could do a compression test but the last test (1.5 yrs ago) it was around 310 320 310 300. There i no t mount on this car (1982 240d). This strong vibration leads me to believe less of a compression issue and something else is amuck... but i just can't think of why it has such a feeling at any speed. |
is the vibration present when the motor is running & the car is motionless?
a sympathetic vibration could occur in the exhaust system &/or drivetrain, rolling or not. |
yes... it is felt when the car is not moving as well.

i checked the rubber donuts hangars that hold the exhaust. Is there any more rubber i should be concerned with on the exhaust?

more things to check...
there could be a couple rubber pucks the size of a $2 stack of quarters that press into the underside of the car in between the resonator/muffler that may be missing (not an expert on this model)
not sure if the same on the 240, but on 300 the down pipe is secured via a u-bolt attached to an arm bolted to transmission that has rubber isolators that could not be doing their job anymore. likewise, the driveshaft center bearing is surrounded by a rubber donut where it is attached to the car. you don't want that to fail completely while driving. ask me how i know ;) this would be a great time to inspect the flex-disks, or guibos, if you prefer. |
another thought
having your injectors cleaned & adjusted w/fresh nozzles could make a huge difference. there may be a diesel shop nearby to call.

i did a visual inspection of the subframe mounts and i can't tell if they are collapsed. They seem to look ok but it's hard to tell. I know the difference between idle shake and this. It's the vibration (felt at all speeds in the car). I guess i am just trying to figure out why it has this chassis vibration. Can someone explain why bad injectors could cause this problem. (i understand the shaking part of bad injectors.. but not the chassis vibration). That will probably be the thing i do next.

yes i remember that post a while ago. The only issue i have with all of this is that i feel it when the car is in neutral and stopped at a light. How would a clutch impact this? I took a look at the clutch/flywheel again (a month ago or so) and everything seemed to be in order. I guess the next thing i will have to do is take it to a professional if the injectors do not solve my problem. |
Clutch issues usually can be isolated by stepping on the clutch... but not if its in the flywheel balance or pp mounting...
