1982 240d 308k miles front Crankshaft seal and spacer replacement

The previous owner has had this seal replaced.

I've read the following link of the detailed procedure to replace the front crankshaft seal.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/334484-1980-w116-300sd-om617-front-crank-seal-replacement.html

Excellent write up with great pictures.

I'm assuming a 240d would be very similar.

They mention that you must replace the pins in the balancer and they also mention to replace the big crankshaft bolt and the 6 smaller Crank pulley screws. Is this recommended in the FSM? I was unable to locate anything about replacing all these parts.

Also, is which manufacturer of the crankshaft seal that I want to buy or avoid? I will order a spacer but will only replace if I see a grove in the spacer.

Thanks.

pete

Hey Pete,

I've attached a link to our catalog, where you'll be able to find reliable parts for the crankshaft. Hope this is helpful!

The 240D is different in that the seal goes into the block, it does not go into a separate removable aluminum split-half fixture/housing.

The lip of the seal needs to go onto the spacer on the hub of the crankshaft, not pushed up against. To get the seal to go over the lip I used a plastic cup over the crankshaft, installed the seal and then removed the cup. I did not know this the first time and the new seal leaked.

Good luck and keep us posted...

Not having the separate removable aluminum split-half fixture/housing could possibly make getting the spacer off the shaft a problem. I don't have a specific tool to remove the spacer.

I was hoping to remove the split housing and pry it on both sides but that's not going to be possible since it's a 240d. I'm assuming there could be damage to the spacer since the car has 308k miles on it.

Is there a high temp grease anyone can recommend to put on the spacer or seal during re-assembly?

Thanks.

A better way

The way I do it is to install the seal first, then oil the spacer ring and slide it on the shaft. I suggest a new spacer ring, but if you decide to use the old ring, you can just flip it over, as the groove is more to the outer edge (at least that has been my experience). Flipping it makes the new seal ride on a smooth surface, as the old groove is now inboard of where the new seal is sealing against.

I did hear you can flip the spacer so I may try that. My only concern is how to remove the spacer if it's stuck to the shaft..

Putting the seal on the spacer first and slipping the spacer on the shaft may be a better way to install the seal since you'll be able to make sure it's properly seated on the spacer.

Thanks.

It is too hard to keep the spacer and seal together when installing them as a unit. The lip on the seal is like a barb on a fishhook. Putting the spacer in after the seal allows the lip on the seal to flex the way it needs to. Putting the seal on after the ring wants to flex the lip the opposite way, and therefore ruining the seal. Also, I have not had a problem getting a spacer ring out. Worst case, a propane torch can be used to heat it up a little, and it will slide right off.

Rollguy...great idea, put the seal in first!!!

When driving the seal in place I put a small amount of grease in the groove where the spring sets to prevent the spring from jumping out during the install.

What type of grease do you use with the seal?
I assume you use just a light amount of grease and not pack the area with grease.

Thanks.

I use any clean wheel bearing type grease. With the spring in place, pack the cavity that spring rests in at four spots around the circumference. No need to pack the entire cavity, just trying to prevent the spring from popping out of place. Oil the sealing lip of the new seal with motor oil.

Use ROLLGUY's idea of putting the seal in before the spacer.

Good luck!!!

Looks very similar to my OM916 engine. You can re-use the two pins, but they may get buggered up. They are cheap at P-P. Be sure to mark the damper and crank well since it only goes on one way (2 pins aren't exactly 180 deg apart). I found it quite hard to get the pins aligned, since I left the AC condenser in and couldn't view head-on, and viewing thru a mirror is tough. Will use my USB borescope next time. Be careful, because some have buggered up their crankshaft snout, ruining it. First time, I got lucky because the pins were stuck to the damper and I assumed that was a factory press fit so left like that and just spun the damper until it aligned and slid on.

Re the seal, I installed the ring first then worked the seal lip over it w/ a small screw-driver, which was easier than the yogurt cup funnel. I was worried that oil can seep between the ring and crank to the outside, so coated the ring ID w/ gasket sealant to stop that leak path and wanted to slide it on first. Actually, I was a little dumber, ruining a seal the first time by pinching the lip between the ring and damper snout. It is a trickier job than on an old Chevy engine.

Since nobody replied to my previous post, I phoned pelican parts and they confirmed that the
Part #: 000-007-00-82-44-MBZ is the pin this will work in my 1982 240d. The link is in my previous post.

Thanks for all the help.
