win 10 and FSM

Crap!! Windows 10 forced an update and my FSM is not working in FireFox 48.01 or Chrome. It may be a Windows or Flash or browser issue. I haven't used the FSM in a while and can't say that the Windows update broke it.

Has anyone else had this issue. For the record, I've officially declared the Microsoft OS a virus because of it's forced updates. I'll only keep a windows box because some insurance companies (Blue Cross only work with IE. xx*** MS.

Any ideas on the FSM are appreciated.

Load it in a virtual machine under something old like XP.

I have one of the cloned $15 eBay WIS/ASRA/EPC disk sets, they give it to you as a virtual machine under XP. Runs awesome on Win 10.

Jay_bob, does the one you have use Oracle Virtual Box? That's the one I have. Ran fine under Windows 10. The I did the major Windows 10 upgrade and VB wouldn't open. So installed the latest version and VB wasn't happy until installed some updated package of I can't remember what. Now runs perfectly again.

There are a few problems with these sets.

First, the VM's run windows XP, which is no longer supported. Nevertheless, you need to spend a couple of days downloading and installing old maintenance updates and service packs because the distribution is day one XP, with zero updates.

Second, because these products tunnel through your IP interface to access the net and hook the peripheral interfaces, you should be running a virus checker INSIDE the VM. The one that runs on your native operating system isn't sufficient. You need to purchase an additional copy of the AV and install it under the VM. Otherwise, the VM becomes a superb vehicle for introducing malware. The one I bought off E-Bay came complete with viruses.

The only browser supplied is IE, so not a bad idea to download a browser that's actually under current support, like Firefox, Opera, or Chrome.

Finally, you need to bring Adobe and Java up to current maintenance.

The good news is that the distributions contain bootleg copies of all the software you need: WIS/ASRA/EPC, XP, and Adobe, as well as the VM software (Oracle or VMware). You won't have to steal anything extra. However, at least one vendor is selling a set that has a bad disk.

Windows 10 is a threat to your privacy. Get rid of it. There is a little assembly language program written by the man who may be the best security guy in the world, Steve Gibson. I have used his stuff for twenty years. I trust him implicitly. It turns off that Windows (virus) that tries to upgrade your computer to Win 10 without your permission.

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

I suspect Microsoft has noticed a softening in their business due to the fact that there is little need for more powerful operating systems, (except for maybe the gamers) and they are collecting user information to sell. Win 10 is designed for that. To the government. To insurance companies. Who knows who else. I do know that what I do on my computer is my business, and no one else's. I have one Linux machine, and I plan to convert totally to Linux.

Richard, I get what you say, and empathize, but you don't carry an I-phone, android phone, or (gasp) windows phone do you?
I spend more time than most reading privacy agreements etc., part of a past job, and don't like having to choose between technology and privacy, but W10 Pro with Cortana disabled etc., is still much more private than your phone, your car, your smart TV, ... you can't escape but you can adapt.
If you're the most interesting person of interest the government has, you've got other problems.

Good tip mxfrank. I was using my son's old laptop for this. It runs nothing else.

I will get an anti virus put on the VM (it'a a VMWare image). I was afraid to patch the XP but I will give it a shot. I didn't realize these programs went out on the net, I thought it was all stand alone.

Even if WIS/Asra doesn't go out on the net (it does, I think), there are other programs installed and potentially viruses that do. The VM shouldn't bleed into the host OS, but because it tunnels the IP service of the host, it allows software to poke around inside your router firewall. It's an ideal way to pollute a network.

Wow Ok.

Luckily that machine is the only Windows machine on my network at home besides my work computer which has corporate grade antivirus and firewall software on it.

I have a Mac for my primary computer and my wife and I have iPads and iPhones.

I will be sure to get some antivirus on that computer and see what I find.

Any ideas how to get rind of accumulated VIN numbers in drop down menu?

WIS and EPC both share the same source file but unable to locate in C: drive files.

Thanks.

There's no 'x' button so to speak, this is the same set up as Jay bob, install on stand alone machine with 6/7 DVD's takes forever, if you sneeze have to start again.

When you click the VIN drop down menu and see the various VINs, put the cursor over one of them...there should be a red "x" next to it. Click it to delete.

Nope, just tried that however it might be under 'utilities' within applications, only problem is I don't have password.

The help manual and files stop at how to delete, section 4.2 FIN History.

btw, this is the old EPC not online version as per jaybob

It's no biggie, just reluctant to enter anymore.
