Rain Sensor

Now that everything on my cars is working perfectly again, I'm back to thinking about minor, inconsequential things....

Both my 98 and my 06 have a rain sensor that controls the intermittent wiper. Not infrequently, though, I find that it either wipes the windshield too often or not often enough for my tastes. What's wrong with a good ol' fashioned intermittent wiper? I think I prefer that.

I imagine sensitivity can be adjusted with Star SDS....hardly seems worth the effort, though.

I wish it had a Rain-X mode.

That might be able to be added without too much difficulty. In the 80's there used to be an add on kit that fit most cars.

One could be generated with a time delay relay, generally all you need to do is get the wiper motor past the park position and it will make a full sweep on it's own. Does your car have a manual "mist" ( one wipe ) function?

Someone is bound to still make a retro fit. Try electronic kit makers like Spark Fun , Velleman.

If that fails, 80's Fords used a control box between the wiper switch and harness that might be able to be adapted to your needs. Retro fitting Fords was easy, change the wiper switch and plug the control box and you are done.

There was a company that used to make an upgrade relay for the w123... I can't remember the name right now. But basically you swapped it in for the original and it allowed you to infinitely set the intervals the same way BMW did in the 90's... I'll have to see if I can find it.

a universal timer would work too (the % are in terms of some fixed amount of time, for example 30 seconds):

Yep, that is what I was thinking of. NCC makes a multitude of timers. Have a look on the McMaster Carr web site.

My 97 C280 has a fixed delay position and no rain sensor. Perhaps an older system can be retro fitted. Making the sensor change using STAR would be more direct though.
