Bang, now no 1st or 2nd gear

1984 300D, stock transmission, mostly stock engine. Daily driver. Transmission rebuilt by MB tech four years ago.

I've driven this car ~17,000 miles a year, every day, every type of weather. She's never left me stranded.

I did the regular valve lash adjustment two days ago and replaced the rocker cover gasket. Nothing out of the norm was done.

Got in the car this afternoon, backed out of the driveway, shifted it into park and BOOM. Nice solid bang like one would get from a hard shift. Then no power forward, revving, but no movement.

I backed up into the driveway, checked everything out. Nothing seemed wrong or out of place. No leaks. So I drove out of the driveway forward, slightly sluggish. Drove up a steep hill, but no speed. Drove to the store, speeds up to 45, shifted well.

It will not go into first or second when you slow to a stop. Putting it in S or L seems to do nothing, it will still take off in third.

Bowden cable is adjusted. But I have no idea what is going on.

This is something of a WAG, but it may be that the "BOOM" is a clue. If the parking pawl kicked out of a tooth while there was pressure on the internal linkage, there is a possibility that the aft portion of the valve body (which supports the parking detent linkage), was cracked, and may be allowing a leak in the fluid circuits.

I think I may have found the answer.

A friend of a friend told me to try to disconnect the Bowden cable and try to drive it. Apparently the Bowden cable, if left with no tension will force the transmission to start out in 2nd gear when D is selected. If that happens to me then the B2 piston is what has failed as 3rd and 4th and reverse work currently with no hesitation.

So my trans is slipping because of the B2 piston failing. Yay! An answer.

I'll post back when I confirm this by replacing the B2 piston.
