Swapped from a Garrett to a KKK turbo, air cleaner doesn't fit now?

Hello guys and gals!
I recently (this morning) replaced my worn out Garret turbo on my grey 82 w123 with a KKK k26, everything went very well, until I got to the air cleaner housing. It's like the u pipe is too long, the housing won't go back far enough to line up with the bolts.

I've tried to determine what could be different, if the turbo was from a Cali car or what, but I understood that the manifolds wouldn't line up if it was, but everything fit perfectly, just the air cleaner.

I'm not super sure what car the turbo was originally from, just that it fit my car perfectly with no modifications or adjustment.

I'd prefer not to have a silly cone filter on there if I can avoid it, but is there a different length u pipe or am I stuck fabricating something to make this work?

Can the plastic U pipe be trimmed to fit?

There were two versions of the air cleaner box. One with the ARV on the turbo clearance and the other without.

I assume your air cleaner is built for a turbo with an ARV.

Here is the difference. Notice the snout is longer for the ARV air cleaner than the Federal.

The U-tube lengths are the same on both version and interchangeable.

Is this something where ABS Plastic Plumbing Pipe might be able to act as a spacer? The plumbing section of hardware stores also have rubber sleeves and couplings as well as various ABS Hubs.

There is also Silicon Hose for Turbos.

AHA!!! you nailed it, except its the other way around. I have a air cleaner with the shorter snout, as the car is a federal 82 model.

I got a turbo that has the ARV so I need an intake with the longer snout.

I'm not sure, I can't see any issue with it since its on the cold side, I know for the charge side its a bad idea because the compressed air can get hot and cause some materials to degrade, but ABS might be ok, I was looking at using PVC as a charge tube for a jetski turbo retrofit but was informed that was a very bad idea as pvc heated to 12psi temps would release a very corrosive gas that wouldnt play well in that motor.

So now, I either need to locate a new air cleaner for the ARV turbo, or use a fernco or some kind of adapter to move the air cleaner back a little bit so it all fits nice.

there is one air cleaner on ebay but they want about 60 bucks and its reallt rusty looking, I've been trying to get away from rust since the move south lol

I though you were speaking of the U-tube connection. There is no compressed air in that area and when the Engine is running there is of course lots of air flow passing.
Also I replaced My Air Filter and My Air Intake is ABS Pipe.

Betwen the Turbo and the intake manifold on the Big Rig Diesel it was typical to use a reddish orange colored rubber sleeve to connect them.
On eBay there is plenty of Silicon Sleeves for the same purpose.

I suppose there is a spec somplace that could be looked up for the ABS concering the max heat it can take. But I have had zero issues with mine.

Maybe someone with a remote thermometers can take their Car for a drive and take a temp readingo on the Compressor Housing of the Turbo and see what the temp is. I have one but the Car is not here to do that.

No I'm sorry, yes it is the u tube that I'm having issues with, due to the new turbo having the arv and the old one didn't.

I was just saying I knew for the charge side where there is pressure it's a bad idea to use plastic pipe, abs may be OK though since it has a much better temperature tolerance than PVC.

Also, remember that there are two sets of holes in the air cleaner mount. You may have the three rubber mounts in the rear holes, and the U tube will not reach. Just a thought, Rich

If push comes to shove, making up a new paper element air cleaner setup isn't too difficult - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/3008665-post306.html

....an order of magnitude better than the oil/gauze contraptions available at your local generic supply house.
