You could get them mounted, but the wide turning radius would cause contact I'm sure.
I have a set of correct offset 17" rims I want to try on my SD, but I don't think they would look right on a D... honestly, the bunts look out of place on the D... hubs look better to me. I bet you could find a set from MB you liked, but, 18" is awfully large in there.

I just put a set of BBS rims on my 300TD they are 7 1/2x16 with ET22 and the tires are 225/45R16. The set came with the tires and I will run them till they are shot and the next set will be 50% aspect ratio.

Do what you want, it's your car. Hopefully someone who has done this can give you the answer you want.
A plus-one or plus-two is fairly harmless, I've done a lot of them. Your plus four or five combined with the width increase will cause clearance problems, and the wide low-profile rubber will mess with the suspension geometry and make it difficult to drive as it will constantly self-steer on anything but perfectly smooth and level pavement, lowering will amplify the effect and we haven't even discussed the harsh ride and rapid suspension wear. If you do go larger and wider the goal should be to match the tread diameter of the original setup, and any width increase should keep the steering offset where it is now, which is an imaginary line through the ball joints to the pavement, should roughly bisect the tire patch. The short answer is that it will be all show, and make your car ride and drive badly, even somewhat dangerously, even if it does all stuff in there. Your choice.

Most on here are more of a purist mindset, so questions like this are usually answered with angry keyboard mashing and name-calling, so now you know. Having said that, I've looked into getting a more attractive wheel for the 123 and found that 16" is about the limit for the suspension and steering setup on these. Even 17" at ET35 will rub the wheel well unless it's super skinny. The good news is that you'd be clear of the tie rod, which is the big hurdle on smaller wheels.
I've found several instances of 18+ wheels riding so poorly that the owner switched to a smaller wheel. Mainly the rubbing and what they call "tramlining," which is the car following any little line or crack on the road, sometimes dangerously so. I even get this a bit with the larger tires I run on the 14" stock rims. You'll also be limited to some pretty short rubber, which will do nothing to lessen the bumps. So there's some actual data for you. Wow, a wheel thread with facts instead of just thoughts and feelings! -Rog |

I highly doubt those would fit. I have these AMG Monoblocks on my W124 and I am fairly certain they would rub in both the front and back on my W123. As has already been stated you need to stick with a smaller size on the W123. There are plenty of period correct options available for your car in 15 and 16 inch sizes. I'm really pushing the limit on wheel size on my wagon but I love how it looks and it still drives great.
Front - 17 x 7.5", ET35 with 215/45ZR-17 Continental ExtremeContact DW tires Rear - 17 x 8.5", ET30 with 225/45ZR-17 Continental ExtremeContact DW tires |
