Scored a nice 300D parts car for a set of front seats!

I need to cut down my front springs on my 300TD since putting on the BBS wheels with 225/45R16 tires. So called up on this car on Craig's list and they were not willing to pull the front springs, they just wanted the car out of there. So I went to look at it, and the owner just happened to be a the garage where it was parked. He said he pulled what he needed off of the car to fix his 240D after hitting a deer. Said he really needed a good set of seats that had good springs in it. Said I would make a swap of good seats for what was left of the car. So I picked it up on Tues. and was surprised on how nice it was! It is a 1985 300D and has a new complete factory exhaust system, new rear brake calipers, rotors, pads and flex lines, and new alternator. New axles that have been converted over to the bolt in CV joints. Plus it runs like a champ and shifts fine. It was on the road just a few months ago, but was parted out when the driver's side front suspension bent in due to rust in the shock tower. Here are a few photos of it the way I got it, and a video of it running.

Yep.

Seriously, I got the springs still in the towers and if you wanted them to save this fine example, you can have them. If could see how far it went, could better cut them to match and reduce shipping.

You guys don't know what rust is! In the winter here they put down so much rock salt on the roads, that your cars are gone in about 10 years! Any car from the 80's driven in the winter here will be shot in 5 years. That is why this one was parted out. It would cost more to save it, than the price of a good rust free car. So this one will die, so others can live on! All parts will be for sale, other than the front springs, and exhaust. I will hang onto the exhaust for when mine needs to be replaced.

Actually I do. The '79 wagon had it in the rockers, front pillars totally gone, part of the front fenders and floor pan, and forget the battery area (surprised the battery even stayed in place). Its back half is going to go on the '85 wagon some day. Yes, a bit of work, but so worth it since wagons are super rare and only going to get more so.

I totally agree on the value of a good wagon, or a good coupe! but this is a sedan we are talking about. Not worth the time, effort or cost to fix.

Just because it's not a coupe or wagon it's worthless. I'll never understand that logic.
If I was closer I'd gladly give you $400 and take it off your hands and fix it in my driveway in a matter of days and put it together and drive it. That looks too otherwise clean to part out. So many wasted w124s and w123s because everyone is scared to learn to weld or get their hands dirty.

Why would I sell you a car that is worth over $2k in parts for $400?? This thing is rusted out and a lot of parts are missing already. They made almost 2 million sedans yet only 30k turbo diesel wagons, and even fewer coupes. this is why no big deal if a sedan is cut up.

Did the fellow tell you if the cruise worked or can you test it on a working system?

I had my AMP (electronic) module rebuilt by Peter at GDC, I believe is company name, but the Actuator (motor) was sent back dismantled.

I tried one used but iffy one Motor but that did not get systeming.

It wasn't allot of money so I did not return it because I let it go and did not mess with it for a couple of years.

The cruise on mine did work. When it stopped working, I figured one or the other was shot. The rebuilder said Amp was bad but he fixed it. He could do nothing with the Actuator.

Before getting too involved with TS'ing I'd like to try a different known good Amp if possible. I hear bad Actuators and make a Board go bad so I have let it rest and done nothing.

BTW nice fine on that 4 door. Sounds like a diesel for sure.

It is a W123.

Maybe they made 2 million of these 123`s, but that is world wide.
The supply of these is dwindling down at a rapid rate.

Yes, but that is a natural occurrence. That holds true for every car that has ever been made. The amazing thing is that for most cars this happens after 20 years, while for the W123 it has lasted for over 30 years before becoming an endangered species.

I would also think twice before turning yet another one into a parts car, but if it's a rusted out example than I would probably do the same.

In another decade most of us will no longer have our daily driveable W123's (I am not counting on Betsie making it to 2026 to be honest) and the only ones still in existence will be garage queens.
That is how it goes. In the mean time I will keep driving Betsie and enjoying it, for however long it will last. I will be sad when the time comes that she has to go, but that is how these things go.

I have a few Actuators that test out fine. Just shoot me an email at von@vonsmog.com for a price on one.

Pulled the motor and transmission today, will pull a few more parts this week and then off to the scrap yard! Sure is easy to get everything out when you cut out all the metal in front of the motor!
