99 E300 Glow Plug Light

I changed out one bad GP a week ago and while all seems normal, good cold starts no hesitation or roughness, my GP light is staying on for about 60 seconds after start. This started to happen today on either cold or hot starts. Previously, the GP light would go out on engine start.

Anyone else have this trait?

Typical indication of a bad glow plug.

Yup, if the GP stays on, mine goes out after 60 sec.

You have another starting to go bad.
I have had this, after a couple of weeks of normal hassle free starts the plug will have died and you will need to replace it.
Not sure if you use a tester on them if you will find any noticeable difference in readings from the one going bad.
I always thought they just die but I have had a couple do this to me and the light may not even stay on sometimes, but eventually you notice the grey smoke and the engine stumble at start and plugs then fully dead

Pull OBD II codes, this relay gives 3 codes, one for cyl. 1 or 2 fail, another for cyl. 3/4, etc. This should help you narrow it down. Can't remember the codes off hand but I think they are P13xx range.

Cylinder 1 is to the front and 6 is to the rear.

Dang, that stinks but what I thought may be the case. When I changed #1 GP last week I checked the resistance on the rest and they were good, less than .07. Thanks gents, Ill get the codes pulled and check resistance again.

So to review, if the GP light stays on after start-no matter how long- thats an indication of either a bad or going bad GP.

Interestingly it is because the glow plug harness was not fully plugged into the relay. Went to start the car this morning and crank but no start pop the hood and sure enough the plug was not fully engaged in the relay.

LSS if your glow plug light stays on for 60 seconds and then goes out this might be the reason.
