W124 300D glow plug replacement

My 1992 2.5D has a bad glow plug in the 2nd cylinder (reads 56 ohms vs 2 for the other 4). The easiest access seems to be by removing the injection lines for cyls 1-3. Is this true? Is the MB special offset tool the only way to remove these lines?

Once a way is clear to the glow plug, is removing it straight forward?

thanks!

You should be able to use a common metric crowfoot wrench to loosen the IP lines. There are special wrenches for removing tubing connections, I forget the name for them, and there are crowfoot versions of them too. Removing glow plugs from a 602/603 is usually not difficult as they are not the long skinny things that the 606 uses. Be gentle, drive the car first so the engine is warm, put penetrating oil on the glow plug threads for a few days before you try removing them. Use anti-seize on the threads of the new glow plug.

If this is an Engine with an Aluminum Cylinder head it is not uncommon for the head of the Glow Plugs to snap off. I would look in the Repair Links for some methods to decrease the chance of that happening.

Repair Links

Also make plans a head of time for a ride to work in case one or more break off.

The glowplugs do not normally stick and break in the 601/2/3 series of engines, this is a 605/606 issue.

Thats only an issue with the OM606 turbo and non turbo series since they use a long glow plug which has a track record of getting stuck.

For removing the injection line from the injector a standard wrench will work for you if you do not want to front the cash for a crows foot or have hydraulic line wrenches which can also work

A good thing to have are the small plastic clips and wedges when reassembling. With age they tend to crack. These are required to prevent injection line vibration which severs the injection lines over a period of time. Just remove what is necessary to reach the GP.

If you're going to the trouble, it isn't that difficult to just go ahead and buy 5 quality glow plugs, pull the intake manifold and change them all at once. Tweak your Alda a quarter turn or two at the same time for slightly improved off-idle performance if desired, it would be easily accessible at this time.
Think about delivery valve seal/o-rings at this point as well if the top of your injector pump is wet/dirty as this will be way easier with the manifold off as well
